Mckellen on Backch@t

Thanks to Sharon!

Extract: I don't know where you were at four o'clock this morning,(laughter) but I was on my way to Stone Street studios where I had a three hour makeup putting on the wig and the moustache and the beard and the nose and making me look as much like Gandalf's stereotype as possible. And then what happened? Oh then I had ten hours on a mountain ledge in a studio (laughter) . . . and as I was leading the party with my staff, and my large pointy hat I had to clear the snow out of the way, with two huge wind machines blowing polystyrene balls at me. (laughter).

Running Hobbits

A new image from the offical German site. Great!!

Gollum glimpsed, goes underground

From Saturday June 3 issue. Thanks Sharon!!!!

"One of the best-known characters in The Lord of the Rings has been as troublesome in real life this week as he is in the books. Gollum, a spider-thin creature who was once a hobbit, will be a computer-generated creation in Peter Jackson's $360 million film trilogy of J R R Tolkien's classic tale. Details on what Gollum will look like have been kept secret. But on Monday photographs showing a rough computer-generated rendering and a model of Gollum appeared on TheOneRing.Net, an unofficial website devoted to Jackson's project. The site removed the photographs several hours later after complaints from Jackson's film company in Wellington and New Line Cinema in Los Angeles. Some websites refused to show the photographs, but others have boasted about having copies. OneRing.Net New Zealand co-ordinator Erica Challis said yesterday the images were put up by the websites's main co-ordinator in Canada. The co-ordinator removed them after a phone call from a Lord Of The Rings representative. The website has shown several photographs claimed to have been leaked from the films. This week it continued to show one of the characters, Gimli the dwarf. Ms Challis said it decided the Gollum images could spoil the surprise for some fans. "We weren't thinking correctly. We are [now] aware of how potentially destructive they were," she said. But she acknowledged some fans had downloaded the images. "It's back underground. The real die-hard fnas will find it." Lord Of The Rings publicist Claire Raskind wouldn't confirm whether a request to take the photos off the site was made. "I guess they made a choice to keep the fans surprised. The production and New Line are happy with that decision." Asked if the images had been leaked from Jackson's Miramar studios, she said she had no idea. Tracing the leak would be difficult. The first of the three Lord Of The Rings films is due to be released in December next year."

Therefore, I have very much to do right now, but the transport will soon be finished. Then will www.theoldforest.cjb.net lead to the new server, and then will updates of the other sections begin again.

John Howe and the Balrog

Theonering.net published an article that appeared in a French magazine with Lord of the Rings concept artist John Howe. He talks about the Balrog design. What happened to shadow formed like wings?

Most interesting parts:

The most exciting was to get approval for a drawing, then to see it be realised. The drawing gives a definition, and afterwards everybody goes on working on it; we indirectly, Peter Jackson directly. All this evolves until the *end product*. I've seen someone who worked one or two weeks on a man-sized Balrog's replica. Then, they sculpted his huge head, the size of those things you can see on castles' walls. However, he'll never totally exist in a fully sculpted shape [under his true size]. His wings were only made with the digits, without leather between them, because it will be digitally added. The whole thing will take shape in the computer, and there'll be other changes, I think. As I'm talking to you, now, I don't exactly know which will be the final shape of the Balrog. I also managed to see parts of the orc-army, and some places like Barad Dur.

Some parts didn't require much work, as the Nazgul who're very close to what I've drawn before. It's the same with the Balrog, who came quickly to the sculpture step

Arwen not going into Moria?

New rumors at theonering.net say that it maybe was the black gate that was filmed, not Moria. Therefore, Arwen will maybe not go into Moria. Great news!

Invasion of the Hobbits!

The Text:

"Lord of the Rings actors Elijah Wood and Sean Astin, who play hobbits Frodo and Sam, look perfectly happy clambering over rocks and taking advice during the filming of these scenes at Whakapapa, near the bast of Mt. Ruapehu, recently. But the chill in the air obviously proved too much for them - the pair sat on hot water bottles to keep warm during the breaks in filming.

Our exclusive pictures show the shooting of scenes from Frodo and Sam's journey to Mordor. A series of marching scenes and battles between warriors and Orcs were also shot. Often, three scenes were filmed at one time.

"The whole thing was very well organised," says an on-looker. "The equipment they're using is very high-tech and each of the filming units is linked by satellite, so director Peter Jackson can watch all of the scenes being filmed at once on screen monitors."

Spectacular armour, including shields and intricate motifs, was worn for the battle scenes.

There are 700 cast and crew members involved in making the Lord of the Rings trilogy. They suffered a setback about three weeks ago, when a sudden dump of snow caused the roof of a costume tent to collapse. Some costumes needed repairing but no other problems arose during the four weeks spent filming at Whakapapa. The cast and crew have returned to Wellington to continue filming and will head to the South Island soon. - Karyn Henger."

John Howe

Theonering.net has found an interesting interview with John Howe.

Most interesting part:

Alan lee and myself divided this universe between us. As his children are adults, he remained in New Zealand. We roughed out the whole together. I designed the inside and outside of Bag End, and especially Barad Dur, Minas Morgul and all this kind of places. But there wasn't any exclusive right. If we had an idea to submit, nothing prevented us to do it. We were meddling with everything, nearly everything, as the costumes have been designed later. When the various scenarios were more defined, we had more often to go into other departments to give our opinion. Near the end, we passed perhaps some 2-3 hours drawing, and the rest of the day we went to see what was going on next door. Everybody was working in the same building, a kind of huge maze-warehouse rebuilt, filled with designers, sculptors, prosthetics-makers, model-makers… A real creative bath. There wasn't any closed department. Everything goes from one room to the other, and you're only some steps ahead of the computer room. Peter Jackson really made there an astounding installation. He invested in a lot of things to build his big studio. He went to work cycling 15 years ago; now, he's bought all. He always refused proposals to go in the US. He wants to do things at home, in Wellington. And it's there that's he's the toughest. He makes people come to him. What he managed to do is very impressive.

Burial of the King

New interesting report from the spy Galadriel (in conjunction with theonering.net).

My task was simple, I was hired by a man who will remain a secret to 'Off' a person who was clearly brieching any conduct of Fashion...

My Target was not hard to find. Some called him 'The King' because he looked and dressed almost too similar to 'Elvis'.

I followed him from the bus and walked in Stealth down a Street in Miramar called Stone street. Unfortuanately it was the Studios he was heading for, a minor delay for me as I would have to get past Security once again and decided that Too many Securitys guards had died in the Line of Duty, I did not want to make a dent on the movie project budget by totally writing off all security Guards. Taking my Trusty Ninja Grappling Hook I climbed one of the Warehouses in persuit of 'The King'. Finally I saw my window of opportunity 'The King' had stopped off in the Studios Green room which is used for Breakfast, Lunch and Coffee to keep the workers at Unit 1A from killing each other due to sleep dep and stress levels. 'The King' stood by the Refressments Counter, I had made my way behind a Metal Sliding door marked 'Studio 2' and waited for 'The King'. The time had come, pulling 'The King' Studio I fliped him in the air, Donuts and Coffee flew everywhere....

!!!!!!!!CRASH!!!!!!!!!

Was the last thing I heard before looking back I noticed that 'The King' flew through a Dome Roof of a set which had recently been completed.

I went to investigate. Around me stood a Cirlcular Chamber. The outter rims of the Chamber were supported with white columns, within every meter of the columns the builders and designers had made it look as if Pentagons had been inscribed into the stone, the center of each Pentagon had a 'Coat of Arms'. I looked up at the Dome and noticed that the Chamber was split in half probably to make it easier for filming. Ingraved on each column were Ruins of some sort. I looked at 'The King' then looked at the chamber... Pictures flashed in my head, this was the Burial Chamber of the Kings of Minas Tirith.

This was all to weird, pulling out my Katana I went to finish my job. I shaved 'The Kings' side burns off for my cash on delivery. Then whispered to the artist formally known as The King 'Cafiene Kills' and made my departure.

What the man did with 'The Kings' side burns I do not know.

The rest is between me and my Budda Statue

Worldwide release at the same time?

New Line International has slotted the final key pieces into the worldwide distribution structure on its ambitious $300m Lord Of the Rings trilogy currently shooting in New Zealand. The Time Warner owned studio is now rallying its partners for a massive coordinated promotional and merchandising blitz for the worldwide simultaneous release of the first film The Fellowship Of The Ring on Dec 14, 2001.

Galadriel writes again

The spy Galadriel has once again written about the movies (report presented in conjunction with theonering.net)

This is Galadriel of the Koga Ninja Clan.

I am writing regarding these films you keep making me talk to you about. Here is my story this time.

I was running around the forest practicing my Dragon Stance and my approach techniques when I felt a grumble in my stomach.

I had a feeling for Sushi. I wondered why this was possible because I had eaten an hour previously. I could almost smell the wasabi... in fact I could smell wasabi: using my heightened sense of smell I went in search.

Once again I came across the The Lord of the Rings set of Helms Deep. Today they were filming scenes of Rohan Horsmen chasing Uruks with Body doubles of Gandalf, Legolas , Theoden, Eomer and Aragorn on horses also.

I noticed that there was a blue screen up that day, 5 meters in height and 15 meters across to be exact. At this point I was suspicious so I went in for a closer look. Thankfully the Riders of Rohan came close to where I was so I grabbed one and dressed in his costume. Complete with helmet with blonde hair glued onto the back, I rode closer to the Director's tent to take a look.

I jumped off the horse and looked at the LCD screen showing test shots of the previous take. And this they would never know: that their security is no match for a Koga Ninja.

I had noticed that there were a lot of PNS, or Provisional Stunts (Fighter), but still that did not explain the extremely large blue screen. Hunting around for more information I watched as Uruk Hai extras lined up in formation: pikesmen, swordsmen, and crossbowmen, all who have distinctly different armor.

I waited a while longer until one of the Assistant Directors started yelling things at the Uruk Hai. What he said would interest you.

'ok all, Gandalf has arrived! You are very scared; we need you to run towards the blue screen, because you have just noticed a forest appear behind you in the last five minutes so you are running for shelter.'

He shouted across the quarry. What I was more interested in at this time was the ear pieces most of the Assistant Directors and heads of each division had.

But then I thought, 'These are Ents coming at the end of the Battle.' The Ents had arrived!! Obviously they will be in the movie, so all can rest their Tolkien hearts.

I left my horse which I called 'POOKY' and made my way for the female toilets. Grabbing a lady who appeared to me as an A.D. I tied her with toilet paper and took her ear piece. Over it I heard a lot.

*Due to weather conditions the new Helms Deep sets will be filmed in studio along with the retreat to the glittering caves.

*Minas Tirith will be erected in the same quarry and will be in production around spring.

*From Wednesday-Friday this week, elves will be used in studio for the Helms Deep studio sets.

*Torrential rain has slowed down the production at Haywards Hill and they are missing vital shots which they can only do at the outdoor sets.

*Ents are completely CGI with the help of WETA visuals, apparently they look more tree-like than human-being-like but somewhat transform from tree into walking being.

*Other scenes included huge battles between Uruk Hai and Rohan warriors in front of the 3 scale miniature of Helms Deep castle; using lighting and camera trickery it looks like the battle field is dense with fighters and the castle will look like it is in the distant background.

This concluded my day at the Helms Deep set. I headed back to the Dunharrow set because I had dropped one of my favorite Vials of Poison and it was the last I had so I needed it desperately.

Dunharrow consisted of many tents with Rohan and Dunedain warriors, Viggo Mortensen was doing a small scene where he walked from one tent to another with many background Rohirrim behind him. This was interesting because not only have I seen him speak Elvish on screen at Helms Deep, but I also admired his acting skills.

I managed to slip off the set using my Ninja skills of invisibility and deception. Moments later I was back in the forest practicing my Dragon Stance again.

What happened next is between me and my gods... and maybe you.

Until next time,

Keep an eye open,

Galadriel
