VINCENT NILSSON Born 1951 close to Jönköping, Småland, Sweden. Later the family moves to the northern part of Skåne, southern Sweden. Starts playing euphonium in a church youth band 1961 and switches to trombone 1967. Moves to Copenhagen 1970 starting studies of classical trombone at the Royal Danish Conservatory of Music. Starts working with the Tivoli Big Band 1973 and with the Danish Radio Big Band 1974. Works with danish trumpetplayer Palle Mikkelborg and in Germany with the Kurt Edelhagen and Peter Herbolzheimer big bands as well as the radio bands of Cologne and Hamburg. Is still working with the Danish Radio Big Band. Leaders and guests have included Thad Jones, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Stan Getz, Dexter Gordon, Bob Brookmeyer, David Sanborn and Van Morrison. Started the Vincent Nilsson Quartet 1996 playing Negro Spirituals in new jazz arrangements. The CD 'Jazz Trombone Spirituals' is released on the Storyville label with guest appearence by the drummer Ed Thigpen, famous for his long time work with the Oscar Peterson trio. |
