When a group of women descends on a table next to Diesel's on the Chateau Marmont patio, he instinctively puts on his sunglasses. The Irish heartthrob Colin Farrell (Minority Report), who happens to be visiting the hotel, wanders by with a bottle of Corona to say hello. "What are you doing next?" asks Farrell. Diesel explains that he's about to start shooting The Chronicles of Riddick, a sequel to Pitch Black, and he's developing a Braveheart-type historical epic in which he will star as Hannibal, the Carthaginian conqueror. "So you're taking over the world," says Farrell, a bit awed by Diesel's clear-eyed ambition. "That's good, if that's what you want."

Diesel, in fact, does want.

"Yeah," he says, leaning forward, "it is nice."

What was the toughest stunt in XXX?
Well, each stunt was difficult. All the stunts were difficult for their own reasons. What I found particularly difficult was on Ahab [a missile equipped speedboat], I was standing up on Ahab, in the river in Prague. That was very, very difficult because if I would've slipped off, I would have died of hypothermia in 10 minutes.

Tony: How far have you come since those days? Can you think back to when you were in that apartment?

Vin: I definitely remember being in that apartment. I moved there right before Pitch Black was released. I remember they raised the rent from $1,500 to $1,650 and I wanted to save money, so I slept at a friend's house on the couch for five months. While Pitch Black was coming out and Boiler Room was coming out, I went to the premieres from a couch.

MARIA: What was more nerve-racking for you -- the kissing scenes or the stunt scenes?

VIN: The stunt scenes ... (Lifting up sunglasses) trust me, the stunt scenes.

MARIA: So you enjoyed it as well?

VIN: I loved the kissing scenes!

MARIA: She (ASIA ARGENTO) said you were the best.

VIN: (laughs) What can I say to that? She's incredible. She's an incredible kisser. She lives up to that Italian passion.

XxX recensioner

Just saw XXX and man, the movie is just fantastic, I expected much less but I ended up seeing the most "pure fun" movie of the year. I liked The Fast and the Furious, I always thought Vin Diesel was kinda ok, but after seeing this VIN Diesel is a revelation, the leading man of the 21st century, in XXX he has incredible charisma, virtually the entire movie TREMORS from his massive on screen presence and the fantastic stunts Rob Cohen has conceived, and to all of you who liked The Fast and the Furious, the former seems like a little teaser trailer to XXX. This movie maybe isn't the most "intellectually" engaging but it sure brings to mind a great Gladiator quote "Are you not entertained" and pure, action packed entertainment is what this movie is about and lots of it at that, more and better than in any recent flick I can remember. This movie puts to shame the latest Bond sequels and just shows how that franchise has lost the pulse of new generations, XXX is Dr.No of certainly a new "Bond Sized" franchise, its refreshing and engaging, it kicks you outta your seat and makes you wish you were Vin Diesel, I have no doubt this movie is gonna have a massive following.

'XXX's' CG stunt

Leave it to home-brewed Hollywood software to handle the hard knocks. In Revolution Studios' upcoming "XXX," which opens Aug. 9, VFX facility Digital Domain used its own proprietary software to make it appear as if Vin Diesel did all his own stunts. The heads of stuntmen, wearing helmets and flame-retardant ski masks while jumping motorcycles over explosive razor wire fences, were replaced by an extremely detailed computer-generated model of Diesel's head and neck. An authentic-looking CG version of the actor's bald pate was possible because the team at DD worked out a new code -- based on computationally brain-racking subsurface scattering techniques (which controlled how light appeared to reflect off his skin) -- to give Diesel's head a realistic glow. DD ended up swapping Diesel's head in more than 40 scenes in which stuntmen parachute, snowboard, airboard and motorcycle through extremes. (Sheigh Crabtree)

Late summer b.o. blast coming in Sony/Rev's 'XXX'

As to what "XXX" wound up costing, Cohen puts it "way under $85 million," which is a good price these days "considering what is out there. It's a lot of money. Vin Diesel got his famous $10 million -- and now it's a bargain. In a world where they pay (some actors) $8 million, what's Vin Diesel, who actually pulls in an audience, worth? If all this is insane, then at some point you have to say, 'Who really has a following?' And after 'The Fast and Furious,' it's very clear that Vinnie has a huge target audience following and the fact that he's in a movie will, in fact, make people come. That's worth a lot in our world. And, plus, he's of media interest, which is the other half of the equation. When you hire an actor, you're hiring an actor who can act, you're hiring an actor who has an audience that's interested in him and you're hiring an actor that the media thinks is significant enough to feature. I think with Vinnie we get it all."

Bottom line, Cohen observed, "Of all the movies I've done, I'm most proud of this because of how effective a roller coaster ride it is. It has attitude, that's for sure."

Diesel Teases Riddick Trilogy

Vin Diesel told SCI FI Wire that he is confirmed for a trilogy of sequels to Pitch Black, the sleeper 2000 SF hit in which Diesel played a convict. The first of the three follow-up movies is titled The Chronicles of Riddick. "If you're familiar with the [J.R.R.] Tolkien novels, in the same way that Hobbit is prequel to The Lord of the Rings, Pitch Black is a prequel to The Chronicles of Riddick [trilogy]," Diesel said in an interview. None of the three Chronicles will be prequels to Pitch Black, as has been rumored, Diesel added.

The three films will deal with "the universe that Riddick is involved with," Diesel said. "It's got this extensive story that [director] David Twohy's putting together. He calls it the evil Star Wars." Diesel wouldn't reveal any more specific details, but did say why he chose to stick with the Riddick franchise, while turning down further Fast and the Furious movies.

"I always loved the Riddick character, and I thought that the Riddick character spoke to our generation," Diesel said. "It was one of the first times that I saw an audience root for the convict, and I thought that was interesting, the concept of the audience rooting for a guy who's been prejudged, ruled out and given up on and misrepresented. The idea of us judging this guy, Riddick, by his actions, as opposed to his past, is interesting to me."
