The game was released by Gremlin Graphics and the programmer behind this marvellous game was Peter Harrap. It's hard to say exactly what was so great with this game, but one thing for sure was the music (created by Rob Hubbard), witch you should be able to hear in the background. Another thing was that it was some kind of a cute and funny game, the game had a little mysterious feeling, and every time you found your way to a new screen, it was a great discovery.
Here comes a little fact about the game in the Monty Mole series.

It's a long, chilling winter, and Monty makes a daring bid to raid his local South Yorkshire pit to snatch coal. Battling through flying pickets, man-eating fish, coal crushers and drills, he escapes to emerge in Arthur's Castle. Seizing his only chance of toppling the great man, Monty collects the secret ballot papers and vote casting scroll. But Arthur's no fool when it comes to the heavy stuff and his personal bodyguards put up a struggle.
You should notice that the Commodore and the Spectrum version of this game is complete different. I have to say that the Spectrum version is much much better (that was the version that Peter Harrap created).

Monty ended up in prison, cause of the cole stealing in the last game. "Monty is innocent", Sam Stoat thought and so he decided to arrange his best friend's escape. Sam scaled the high walls of Scudmore Prison and went to sniff out Monty. Had he known of the horrors in wait he would not have set out on his mad caper, for guarding Scudmore were mad axemen, walking skulls and ghosts of past inmates. Once inside, Sam set off to find the Governor's office where the keys to the cells were hidden. Finding the safe he picked a likely key and scampered towards the cells. More frustration followed as Sam could carry only one key and had to return for another each time he opened a cell. The prison was a labyrinth, with some rooms to be avoided at all costs - solitary confinement cells, from whose confines death was the only escape. Eventually he found the armoury and, now armed, he despatched many guards to their graves. There was also the phenomenon of the potion, which rendered Sam invisible. Afterwards he confessed that he got very worried when his stomach or head disappeared, which happened every time he ran into one or two of the nasties - the surroundings flickered and merged and lost all their color and definition. Despite that, he recommended the escapade to all would-be gaol-breakers as a pleasant way of spending a harrowing few hours.
As far as I know this game was only made for Spectrum. It is not a very good game, and it’s not similar to the other Monty Mole games, cause it not even a platform game. This game is much more of a sequal to the Spectrum game "Sam Stoat", cause you're actually controlling Sam in this game, and Monty himself does not appeare until in the end of the game, when Sam founds him in one of the cells. Monty then follows Sam outside the prison.

Monty has now escaped from the prison, and he is looking for a boat to take him to safety. One funny thing is that Monty does a somersault every time he jumps in this game (obviously the training in the prison gym did some result).

Monty has now decided to buy the Greek island of Montos. To gain money for this, Monty is travelling through Europe, and steeling! Well, if you once stared, why don’t continue.

Peter Harrap created a Monty Mole game for Spectrum, that was shipped free with the magazine Your Sinclair in January 1988.

After Peter Harrap left Gremlin Graphics, Gremlin Graphics did one more Monty Mole game named Impossamole. In this game Monty is kidnapped by aliens that give super powers. This game was made for Commodore, Spectrum and PC-Engine/Turbo GrafX. The PC-Engine/Turbo GrafX-version is much greater that the others of course. The game is not very similar to the other in the Monty Mole series (it's more like Super Mario Brothers).

So as you can see, there has been released 6 games about Monty Mole (or 7 if you count the Spectrum and Commodore version of Wanted Monty Mole as two separate games). According to me, there is 3 classic games: Wanted Monty Mole (Spectrum version), Monty On The Run, and Auf Wiedersehen Monty.
