Genealogy in Kristdala

It is quite obvious that a large number of people have their roots in Kristdala. Considerable emigration to places both inside Sweden and abroad has taken place in the last two centuries. Småland contributed vastly to the great emigration to North America, and Kristdala was no exception. There is almost not a single family here that hasn't relatives over there.

With the increasing possibilities to travel, better language knowledge and Internet being so widely spread, the interest for genealogy research across nation borders has become really popular. Sweden offers amazingly good sources for genealogy researchers. The Swedish Lutheran church kept track of their members in great detail and those records are now available for genealogy research. Since membership in the Church was compulsory back then, most events like birth, marriage, children and death of all Swedish citizens were recorded. It happened that those records burned or disappeared for other reasons, but most of them have been microfilmed and are now available to genealogists.

The fact that there are records available does not necessarily mean that it is an easy task to get information from them. Hand-written document in a foreign language can be tricky to read. Even if you are fluent in Swedish you may face problems. The records will contain a lot of names of places, often villages and farms, so small that they will found only on a very detailed map. In most cases you need to be familiar with the local organisation of parishes, villages and farms. In addition to this, the way of forming family names used in Sweden back then, could make it even more confusing. If you genealogy work leads to soldiers, officers or even noblemen a basic knowledge of the Swedish history may also be required.

The best way to get around these obstacles is to try to connect to colleague researchers in Sweden. Many of them concentrate to a small region and have therefor the necessary knowledge about details. There is always the possibility that your line will connect to that of a Swedish colleague creating new cousins.
Normally genealogy researchers will be glad to shear information.
