On this side you can catch a glimpse of the
"Swedish VW-trike" construction
To place the engine in front of the trike most of us use two Vw type1 (beetle)gearboxes. The gearbox closest to the engine is empty except for the clutch, startmotor and a drivingaxle. The rear gearbox is stock except for the diff which is *turned to reverse the driving-direction.
After these modifications they are bolted together with a steelplate(adapterplate).*Take out the diff from the gearbox and put it back in from the opposite side
This is how it looks in reality, the big hole in the front diff case will be covered with aluminium plates.
This is the steelplate (adapterplate) and the drivingaxle. The axle is made by welding the backgear and the inputshaft from the empty gearbox to a steal rod. Note that the plate has a ball bearing in the center.
This is a common frame design for the "Swedish trike"
The wheel suspension consists of a coil-over damper and a custom built slewing bracket. This kind of wheel suspension only works if you use a swing axle. The photo below shows the design of the slewing bracket.
The link between the slewing bracket and the frame consists of a uniball.
The swingaxle on this trike is shortened, 5 inches on each side.
Almost there!
The engine has no coolingplates left and is equiped with an oilcooler, and in some cases, an extra deep sump. If the engine is stock or moderately trimmed there is no coolingproblem even on a hot summerday.
