Ranma - Season 1

Type: 18 episodes
Description:
Martial arts comedy about Ranma, a boy who turns into a girl when dowsed with cold water. (His father turns into a panda...) with a violent fiancée that has a lot of boys running after her (they get beaten up by her ^_^).

Treefinger's rating:
Treefinger's comments:
I liked this one, especially Ryoko the ever-lost boy. Amusing to watch and a lot of jokes and stuff you recognize from real life (well, not the fighting scenes or the panda, I mean like the troubles between Akane and Ranma), nice series for everyone ^_^

Ranma - Season 2

Type: 22 episodes
Description:
Martial arts comedy about Ranma, a boy who turns into a girl when dowsed with cold water. (His father turns into a panda...) with a violent fiancée and a lot of other jealous people.

Treefinger's rating:
Treefinger's comments:
The second season gives a change in the usual plot and there is more fighting for one thing, and Akane and Ranma almost never have those cute "ok, let's make peace" scenes that were quite common in season 1. That brings it down half a star in my opinion.

Ranma - The Movie 1 - Big trouble in Nekonron, China

Type: Movie
Description:
Akane gets kidnapped? by a chinese prince aka martial arts master and the Ranma team has to go rescue her.

Treefinger's rating:
Treefinger's comments:
It's suffering from a kind of "ooh-the-series-was-a-success-lets-make-a-movie" disease. There are some funny things and it's not all bad. A tip for all you out there is to watch atleast season one before watching this one to understand all jokes, especially in the beginning.

Record of Lodoss War OVA

Type: ?? episodes
Description:
AD&D meets anime. Dragons, wizards, dwarves and the obligatory young, stupid hero, who gets all the credit.

Karja's rating:
Karja's comments:
Action. This is pure hitpoints-smelling action. Well, I like fantasy, so... :)

Treefinger's rating:
Treefinger's comments:
This is among the best fantasy anime I have ever seen, they really work the stereotypes here, and they do it real good! This is the anime where the dwarf is a real dwarf, the elf is a real elf and the small furry animals from alpha centauri are REAL small furry animals from alpha centauri (sorry, I got carried away). I would have liked more action in this one, but that is probably just me.

Record of Lodoss War TV (CotHK)

Type: ?? episodes
Description:
Concerns the grown up gang from the OVA at first, then a new batch takes on.

Karja's rating:
Karja's comments:
IMO better than the OVA - it has a few more twists.

Treefinger's rating:
Treefinger's comments:
well, I liked the old gang better than the new one.

Revolutionary Girl Utena

Type: 39 episodes
Link: http://www.duellists.tj/
Description:
Tenjou Utena is a new student at the Ohtori Academy . When she was very young her parents died, and a prince arrived and comforted her, and ever after that she wants to become a prince herself. She is drawn into a strange society, mostly consisting of the Student Council, where students duel for the hand of the Rose Bride and the power to revolutionize the world. The Rose Bride is Himemiya Anthy, a silent young woman who tends the roses in Ohtori's indoor garden. The current champion of the duels, Saionji Kyouichi, is treating Anthy very badly and Utena gets angry and challenges him.

There are four main story arcs in the series. The first, "The Student Council Saga" is light, mostly setting the scenes and introducing the main characters. The second, "The Black Rose Saga" is darker and grows increasingly surreal. The answers to all the questions in the series begin to get answered in the last two arcs, "The Ohtori Akio Saga" and "The Apocalypse Saga".

Revolutionary Girl Utena is heavily inspired by Rose of Versailles, a classic anime series from the 1970's.

Karja's rating:
Karja's comments:
Haven't seen much of it. The first episode was great, but I've heard it goes up and down.

Merry's rating:
Merry's comments:
Revolutionary Girl Utena is very surrealistic, both in imagery and plot, but it usually works very well. The characters are interesting and change during the story - especielly Utena and Anthy. The beginning is rather light, but then the series turns darker and darker - just the way I like it.

There are some five episodes that doesn't fit in very well, relating to one of the council members, Nanami. On the other hand they aren't important to the story, so there's no need to see them.

On the whole the series is amazing, and I liked it a lot. I recommend it highly.

Treefinger's comments:
Mymy, maybe I should watch this one, though I don't like the sound of the word "surrealistic", reminds me of a horrible drawing of a weird apple at my old school ^_^

Road to El Dorado

Type: Movie
Description:
Two failed thiefs find a map to the legendary El Dorado and journeys there.

Treefinger's rating:
Treefinger's comments:
This movie is fun in that ...Dreamworks? Disney?... style. The horse and the armadillo are cool. I really enjoyed this one and it has many memorable moments and actions.

Robotech

Type: 36 episodes
Description:
Mechas defending the earth. You like the soapoperas on TV? then you're gonna love Robotech from episode 15 and onwards (atleast to 36)

Treefinger's rating:
Treefinger's comments:
We don't want soap anime. We want more action.

Robotech - 2nd Generation

Type: 36 episodes
Description:
Next generation mechas defending the earth.

Treefinger's rating:
Treefinger's comments:
These are a lot better than the first generation robotech episodes. I rather liked them a while there, but they smell of the eighties.

Robotech 2 - The Sentinels

Type: Movie
Description:
Mechas defending the earth from robot space snails from hell.

C-Pol's rating:
C-Pol's comments:

Alas, there are things that make me scream 'euthanasia'. Robotech 2 is definitely such a thing. I really can't believe that I used to love it as a kid. At least this is proof that I do evolve.

'Meanwhile, on the third moon Tyrol' all hell is breaking loose, at least if you can believe the narrator voiceover. If you don't believe you can see for yourself as the brave defenders battle it out against the verminous robot space snails from hell. Yep, they're snails and they're out for blood. How do I know? Well, the fact that they go 'we shall crush them' every 10 seconds is a telling sign in one of the most stereotypical evil conqueror roles since the American anti-jap propaganda reels of WW II.

ARGH, I'm so distressed after watching this piece of total filth that I can't even write coherently. Animations are nonexistent (panning over a still is apparently a valid way of animating), music is the Super Mario Brothers version of 'When Johnny comes marching home', clothes and haircuts are stolen directly from 'the Mods' and all heroes are one-eyed (I can't figure out any other reason why they should have hair covering half their faces). Oh, and rockets never fly in a straight path but always do a cork screw dance before hitting (or being nicely sidestepped if the target is piloted by a hero). Also, this is a pilot for the next series so watching it just gives you heartburn as you consider that there is more of this crap to come. At least the female officers don't giggle.... much....

Rose of Versailles / Berusaiyu no Bara

Type: 39 episodes
Link: http://www.interlog.com/~dgsimmns/RoV/RoV.html
Description:
RoV started out as manga in 1972, created by Ikeda Riyoko. It was one of the first shoujo mangas created by a female artist, and one of the comics responsible for the following shoujo manga boom. In 1979 the anime was released.

Oscar Francois de Jarjeyes is the sixth daughter of a general in late 18th century France. He almost despairs when finding out that the newborn child is another girl instead of the heir he needs, and then decides to raise her as a boy. She ends up as the Palace Guard captain at the court of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette.

In the beginning Oscar is very idealistic and believes in the king's god-given right to rule France, but she grows more and more understanding of the problems that France is facing. She sees the poverty and squalor caused by the aristocracy.

The bright and cheerful beginning of the anime series grows darker as the French Revolution looms over the horizon, and all ends in tragedy, as it must.

Merry's rating:
Merry's comments:
RoV is not a big budget production, and it shows, but the series is very well done considering the low rate of animation (as opposed by camera tricks like zooming, or following the picture). And, most important, it follows the manga version's beautiful, and tragic, plot. The character design is one of the best I've seen. (I don't generally like the faces of anime characters all that much) RoV is a bit too cute in the beginning, and has simplified many of the more complex plots occuring early on. Probably this couldn't be avoided - the series has to set the stage for the tragedy of the French Revolution, but I didn't like that. The story arc is very well plotted, and although it cannot possibly contain all the twists and turnings of the manga, and sometimes to simplistic, it still succeeds admirably.

I recommend it, but with a warning that it may be a bit dated, and should be seen with that in mind.

Roujin Z

Type: Movie
Description:
Anime that gives a solution for the aging, automatic surveillance and healthcare. Too bad the military has installed a new superintelligent computer into the computerized bed that wreaks havoc. Mecha-like action with a sickbed that has a patronizing momma-voice!

Treefinger's rating:
Treefinger's comments:
Man, this is sick (And I don't mean the elderly man in the movie). It is fun to watch, but afterwards you really wonder what will happen to you when you get old.

Rurouni Kenshin

Type: 95 episodes
Description:
Based on semi-true events in Japan around the Meji-era. Kenshin is a badass (who looks like a girl :) ex-hitokiri (assassin, approx.), that has changed his ways.

Karja's rating:
Karja's comments:
All 95 episodes are definitely not great, but with 95 episodes, of which some are totally amazing, you can't go wrong. If it had been "compressed" it could have challenged Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Treefinger's rating:
Treefinger's comments:
Kenshin is my favourite historical anime character, this serie mixes humour and no shit Kenshin action in a way that really appealed to me. A must see! (well not all 95 eps maybe, but the Kenshin concept). "This is not training! This is deforestation!", Sanosuke on his way to Kyoto. ^_^

Rurouni Kenshin OVA

Type: 4 Episodes
Description:
Explains the story before the series, where Kenshin got his scar and why he quit killing people

Treefinger's rating:
Treefinger's comments:
The animation is way different from the series and way better. It is a good story, sometimes a bit slow, but there is a lot more blood than the series.

Rurouni Kenshin Movie

Type: Movie
Description:
Kenshin steps right into a fight between rebels and the government and has to find out which is good and which is bad.

Treefinger's rating:
Treefinger's comments:
Well, the movie is quite good, but there is way to many flashbacks on the same thing.
