Battle Angel Alita

Type: Movie
Description:
Cyborg with no past gets rebuilt by a man and falls in love with a boy who has a dream about going up to the floating city above where everything is so great.

Treefinger's rating:
Treefinger's comments:
Alita ("To the death!"), the cyborg, is small, cute and cool. The story is touching and the rest is great. Spinning, smart cyborg drama-action in a not-so-distant future

Another comic cum movie that fails to live up to the standards of good moviemaking. In fact it fails to live up to the standards of bad moviemaking too. Closely following the series, at least at first glance, Battle Angel Alita tries to compress several albums into an hour of film and, as is common with such ambitions, fails miserably.

If you haven't read the comic, don't bother watching the movie as it will be just another hunk of incomprehensible action sequences strewn with the odd 'sob, sob they love eachother' romanticism's. If you've read the comic don't destroy the experience by watching what is effectively colored stills ripped directly from the books.

There are however some redeeming qualities to Battle Angel Alita. The backgrounds are fairly well done and if you're willing to forgive the fact that pretty much nothing is animated they're even interesting. The setting is fairly well depicted, albeit the desolation of Junkyard City is replaced with some kind of homegrown pastel colored lovefest. And finally, Battle Angel Alita doesn't contain any budget powerpop as is common in anime.

Apart from that it's your common, run of the mill anime that tries oh-so-hard but falls flat on it's badly animated face.

Battle Athletes - Mission OAV

Type: 6 eps
Description:
Deep into the future, all people have agreed that there must be a friendlier solution than war. They settle for sport and build vast satellites orbiting the earth and train their young ones in a sporty atmosphere. This is the story about a girl striving to win the great competition in the university satellite and all the challenges on the way.

Treefinger's rating:
Treefinger's comments:
Unusual with sports as the main theme for an anime, but it's fun. Has many anime clichés and a very crafty university headmaster (only headmaster I've seen surfing on the atmosphere with a surfboard). A refreshing breeze, watch it.

Berserk

Type: ?? episodes
Description:
Large man with troublesome childhood joins mercenaryband and kills people

Treefinger's rating:
Treefinger's comments:
Well, there is a lot of blood in this one, but also good story, it has it's ups and downs but mostly it's quite relaxing to watch.

Blue seed

Type: 26 episodes
Description:
Momiji is the only living girl of an old family with a contract of the gods. She has the power to put the evil plantmonsters the Aragami to sleep forever, but only if she makes a blood sacrifice with her own life. The Aragami knows this and some of them tries to protect her while others are figuring out ways to kill her without making it a sacrifice. Follow Momiji and the aragami Kusanagi on their quest finding out what the blue seeds are and why the aragami has awakened now.

Treefinger's comments:
Quite ordinary anime without much of the cuteness found everywhere else, some jokes are quite low, but what the heck. An example is when Momiji tries to convey her feelings for Kusanagi by writing "I love you" on her underpants since they always show sooner or later. Not much fun action either, I found this a bit bland.

Bubblegum Crash

Type: 3 episodes
Description:
The evil corporation Genom manufacturs evil "Boomers", androids which can if applied wrong cause much damage, but they do also much good in plants. Someone must keep track of the combatboomers out there, and it is the girly team Knight Sabers! These 3 eps are set between bgc 2033 and the 2040 variant.

Treefinger's rating:
Treefinger's comments:
This is still excellent for a mecha series with a suitable evil mastermind, subplots that comes together in the large plot and a big suitable battle in the last ep.

Bubblegum Crisis 2033

Type: 8 episodes
Description:
The evil corporation Genom manufacturs evil "Boomers", androids which can if applied wrong cause much damage, but they do also much good in plants. Someone must keep track of the combatboomers out there, and it is the girly team Knight Sabers!

Treefinger's comments:
Excellent Mecha-series! Good stories, nice animation and great combat scenes. This is much recommended for all you who like those "I-cant-crush-the-whole-town-mechas" which aren't too common (most mechas can crush a whole town quite easily, I don't really like those series, it's too exaggerated, and why do they always put 14 yr olds in control of those mechas? I don't get it.)

Burn Up W

Type: OAV 4 episodes
Description:
A special team of the police called the warriors have to deal with all the strange and dangerous cases the police can't handle.

Treefinger's rating:
Treefinger's comments:
There's a lot of weird humour in this one, I like the work they have on their psycho personalities. A sniper who spends her sparetime drinking beer at a rooftop while shooting at strangers, the meleecombat specialist with expensive interests and so on. There are some worthwhile scenes (the EVA spoof, yeah!) and some cool action, all in all, worthwhile to watch. the sniper is still the way coolest anyhow. the bad thing is that the big plot doesn't end in the OAV, that's very frustrating and makes you think that there must be more episodes somewhere, but there aren't.
