Hammer of Thor*

HOME!

Bearing the hammer of Thor as an amulet is an ancient custom that has become more and more popular in the later years. The idea is that the hammer will bring power and protection to the bearer, and give happiness in life. But the hammer also calls for honor and righteousness, as these are characteristics of Thor himself. Thor is a God of agriculture, although this was not emphasized in the violent era of the vikings. But to the common man he was a friend of the farmer.

Our mythology tells us that the hammer Mjollnir - the name means "miller" - was made by dwarfs, but that Lóki transformed himself into a bug that bit the smith in the face. Therefore, the shaft became rather short. (Before this, Thor had a hammer of stone.)

The hammer is a symbol of Scandinavian culture, and in my opinion the foremost symbol of life itself.

If you, who own a hammer amulet, is interested in our ancient heritage, there are various groups inside and outside of the Internet who work with these things. Under "Links" I have named a few. There is also a mailing list on the net for people who share this interest. Either you decide to join any of these or not, I wish you all the happiness life can give. Or, in the words of our ancestors:

"til árs ok friđar - to wealth (good year) and peace"!

*The word hammer (swe. hammare, icel. hamarr) is an ancient indo-european word that means "stone", "stone tool", "stone slope" or "rock".
