The Heritage of Shannara is about the four descendants of the legendary king Shannara. These descendants - the brothers Par and Coll Ohmsford, their cousin Wren and their uncle Walker Boh get mysterious missions from the dead druid Allanon. Par and Coll must find the legendary long lost "Sword of Shannara". Wren must find the Elves and return them to the Four Kingdoms. And Walker must recreate the forgotten order of the Druids. It turns out that if they fail, the world will die in the hands of the terrible Shadows. And besides that, the characters must all the time avoid the soldiers of the evil Union, which has put up a reward for their capture...
In these books the magic is figured almost as a living being. The ememies, the Shadows, are created of twisted magic, and all the main characters are at some point close to being swallowed and enslaved by the power of the magic and turn to Shadows themselves. And I mean very close... The books doesn't quite end like you thought from the start either and that's good.
In the same world as the Heritage of Shannara are another four books which are all prequels to the series.
