The Belgariad is about a young orphan boy called Garion who one night is forced to leave his home and go out on a long journey with a mysterious purpose. He and his aunt Pol, the mysterious old storyteller Uncle Wolf, Durnik the blacksmith and an always growing number of others travel through many strange countries and meet many strange people, from kings to beggers, knights, businessmen and Sorcerors. Garion's entire beliefs is eventually proven to be wrong and his closest relatives and friends turn out to be creatures directly from the fairy tales! He himself has a lead role in a prophecy, thousands of years old, and his destiny is much greater than he could ever imagine! But the prophecy has to be fulfilled - at any costs...
These books are my favorites close after The Lord of the Rings. Eddings has also written a sequel series called The Malloreon and a couple of prequels together with his wife Leigh - Belgarath the Sorceror and Polgara the Sorceress. But the original is clearly the best.
