The Artifacts of Power
Maggie Furey

Aurian

These books are about a young woman, Aurian, who belongs to the race of the Magicans. The Magicans are immortal creatures with terrible power over the normal humans, but there are very few of them left since their own ambition and greed has made them turn against each other. Aurian finds herself, young and inexperienced, in the middle of the intrigues. The Archmagican and many others try to contol her and her extraordinary strong magic powers, and eventually, Aurian is forced to flee. She brings Anvar, her shy servant with a mystical background, and goes to the Southern Kingdoms where a lot of adventures takes place before she finally goes back to her home to confront her enemies.

The story is told by a lot of parallell actions. You follow Aurian's, her numerous friends' (they are often separated) and her enemies adventures at the same time. At some occations, the enemies kill each other, and people change sides more or less unexpected without Aurian knowing it. This can be a little messy, and there's not even a real final fight in the end, instead the different threads mess up and solve out over and over again during the story. There's even some unsolved threads left in the end... But yet, the books are very good!

The adventures take us through four long books:

  1. Aurian
  2. Harp of the Winds
  3. Sword of Flames
  4. Dhiammara
