German WWII Air Force 3-letter Code - "Flugzeugsignaltafel 'LM'"


This is one of several - all very similar in construction - small Luftwaffe codes. All have 3-letter code groups, which run in semi-alphabetical order. Only two of the letters in the code groups are significant, the third being a garble check. The position of the garble check letter, and the two of significance, changes from code to code (in this particular one, the last letter is the garble check).

I do not have very much information about these codes, but it seems probable, they were used by reconnaissance air crafts, judging by the vocabulary. They were probably broken by FRA cryptanalytically, and/or retrieved from downed air crafts.

Here is an example of how the code could be used:
The message YNW THI NYC (Das folgende ist als Frage zu lesen / habe in Sicht / U-boot.) would decode as "Do you see the submarine?"
