Visiting scientist, National Institutes of Health, USA, 1967-1968. PhD 1974.

Thesis “Hypertension and the blood-brain barrier”, University of Gothenburg.

Professor and Chairperson of the Department of Neurology Lund University 1981.

Represented the Medical Faculty on the board of the Centre for East and Southeast Asia, Lund University 1985-95.

Visiting Professor of Neurology at the Sun Yat-sen University of Medical Sciences, Guangzhou, March 1996 - March 1998, and from November 1999 ­November 2001.

EU appointment as advisor to the Slovak Academy of Sciences 2000-2004.  2001-2002.

Chairperson for The Swedish Dyslexia Foundation 2000-2007.                                    

Vice-chairman for The International Rodin Remediation Academy since 2002 (dyslexia and language development).

Member of the advisory board for the Stroke Competence Network, German Ministry of Research 2000-2005.

Member of the board of International Stroke Society 1989-1996, and of the Steering Committee of World Federation of Neurology (WFN) 1997-2001

Member of the Academia Europaea since 1993 and of the Section Committee for Physiology and Medicine of the Academia 1995-2006.

Main interest areas
Blood-brain barrier and brain edema.  Experimental and clinical stroke. Brain plasticity in the intact and damage brain, rehabilitation, language and music.
