This is Pete Johnson, he was a cabdriver in Chicago with fellow pianoplayers Albert Ammons and Meade Lux Lewis. These three were called the Boogie Woogie Trio and did some amazing recordings with three pianos.Pete was born in Kansas City in 1904 and was originally a drummer.!938 he wnt to New York with singer Big Joe Turner and played at the Apollo. He also got invited to play at Carnegie Hall by John Hammond and that´s were he met Albert Ammons and Meade Lux Lewis. The next year the Boogie Woogie Trio was formed. The most widely spread recording with all three of them is probably the 1939 version of "Boogie Woogie Prayer",(awesome).Pete Johnson was considered by many critics to be the best of them all. He died in Buffalo, N.Y. in 1967
Cow Cow Davenport is mostly known for the song "Cow Cow Blues" that he recorded in the 20s both as an instrumental and with a female vocalist. This song is base for Ray Charles "Mess around".
Amos Milburn is a true favourite of mine. He was born in 1927 in Houston,Texas and was very inspired of the Boogie Woogie Trio and turned it into his own elegant & keypounding style, backing up his vocals. He´s the one that discovered Lightnin Hopkins in 1946 and got him a record deal thru Lola Cullen ( a female doctor who discovered Amos,it was Lola who gave Sam Hopkins his nickname Lightnin). His first recording was "My babys boogying" that sold a good 25 000 copies. His biggest hit is "Chicken Shack Boogie" with Maxwell Davies Band.
