Reviews
This album shows David's great lyrical ability. To illustrate, let me draw attention to two pieces:
On "Lie Down (A Modern Love Song), we find the line: "You give an air of la dolce vita, knowing all and giving nothing away. You make the sins of a Vestal Virgin look nothing more than a roll in the hay."
I wonder how many outside the classical educational system that has long distinguished Europe from its American counterpart would understand the full import of that lyric. The reference to the Vestal Virgins is, of course, a nod to the culture of ancient Rome, where priestesses of the goddess Vesta were required to remain chaste. Failure to maintain purity resulted in the young woman's being buried alive as a punishment. Thus, to claim his lover's actions make the transgressions of a Vestal seem "nothing more than a roll in the hay" is a delightfully lyrical way of saying...well...I think we know by now what he is saying!
Also on this album is one of my all-time lyrical favorites, "The Time is Right for Love." This song tells such a beautiful story that I have always wanted to turn it into a short story or even a romantic novel. With his reference to praying "to the Lord above", I have been intrigued about David's religious backround. Given other references in other songs, I would say that he was either reased in some sort of a Christian home, or, in his heart of hearts, is Christian himself.
