Thrown out from the turbulent Guns N' Roses but still in a good mood. Gilby Clarke talks about the new album, British rock and what it was that happened when he got fired from the rockworld's worst soap opera. ********** - My life has been incredibly hectic for five years, says the 34-year old guitarist and singer. First a world tour with Guns N' Roses and the recordings the cover album "The Spaghetti Incident" with the same band. Thereafter his own (excellent) album "Pawnshop Guitars" before he suddenly got fired from Guns N' Roses. - That's why my new album is called "The Hangover". To wake up after such a gigantic trip is really like a hangover, size XL, means Gilby. I think it sounds very british. - You have good ears. My biggest influences are bands like Rolling Stones and the Beatles. Bands that had real songwriters and put more effort into making an exciting song then to add some childish attitude. But my first idol was Jimi Hendrix, discloses Gilby Clarke. Via his band Kill For Thrills came Gilby in contact with the guys in Guns N' Roses. When Izzy had had it with Axl's moodturns and left in the middle of a going on world tour they called in Gilby. But what went wrong? Why did you have to leave the band? - Well, Axl decided to change musical direction and he probably didn't know what he should have me to. So when it was time to write new songs to an album I was never invited. That Gilby then was a little too outspoken in an interview and among other questioned Axl's dictatorship did probably help... It is six years ago since Guns N' Roses released a real album. There are rumours about a techno-record. But about that doesn't Gilby Clarke know anything about. - I am like I said no longer in the band and don't know either who is nowadays - guess it's only Axl who knows that... |
