Just a suggestion to all our JOTI list participants:

1) get a scouting patch/badge for your local area

2) get an envelope

3) write the following address on the envelope

>Brookhaven, Mississippi 39601

>USA

4) insert badge along with a note to Larry thanking him for the outstanding job he did linking us together for JOTI

Hello to everyone on the JOTI e-mail list. I am getting started with the forwarding of mail for the weekend. I hope everyone can find other Scouts and Scouters that they will enjoy talking to.

I would very much like a copy of the Scout Oath and Scout promise from each country. I would like it in you native language. I plan to print it out on heavy paper and use a pretty font.

Subject: White Water Weekend

On the October Long Weekend 10 Venturers went to Buckarumbii where they split into two groups. One group went canoeing down the Nymboida River from Buckarumbii to Jackadgery which is 44km, this was to get their expeditions.

The other group went to Ramornie to do their discovery award and white water charge. The way to Ramornie was a long one, Sandra had to give her trailer to Mr Hadden as it was pushing her car down the hill. The camp was set up fairly quickly when we got to Ramornie then we had lunch.

After lunch we went down to the river and played in the water and canoes. When we got tired of that we got out of the water just in time for Michael to get us to go cook tea.

While Miranda, Kristie, John and myself were getting tea the canoeists pulled up to our campsite. Tea consisted of rissoles, sausages and salad. The canoeists made do with surprise peas and pasta. After tea Miranda and Patricia made damper that tasted great. We roasted marshmallows till bedtime then went to sleep.

The next morning I found out that Travis had hurt his knee and they needed another person to go canoeing. Dave wanted Peter to go as he had more experience in white water but he didn't want to go. Since they needed someone to go or have someone else drop out Dave asked me to go. I wanted to go and so I did. Dave gave David and myself a quick tutoring and sent us off.

The water was calm and lovely with a nice cool breeze. The first rapid was quite easy and only 30 seconds from our base camp. We travelled slowly taking many breaks and rests. We arrived at a rapid which looked fairly hard just before lunch. Daniel, Ben, David and Myself all made it down upright but Emma and Steven capsized at about halfway.

We arrived at the campsite which was the junction of the Nymboida and Mann rivers at 3:30pm. Camp was set up in a minimum space of time and effort.

For tea that night we had Chicken and Vege rice which has I was told better than the previous night's tea. We were getting ready for bed when I decided not to sleep in a hammock but under David's tarp that he had so kindly set up. Emma and Ben decided they would too.

Everyone hit the sack at approximately 7pm as we were all tired. That night I felt like a Mexican jumping bean as I was up some of the night before I went to sleep fixing tarps or doing odd jobs. Everyone fell asleep between 7:30 and 8:00 that night.

In the morning we ate brekkie bars. We were ready to leave at 7:30 which we did but before we left we watched Daniel and Ben slide down a hill bow first into the water.

We hit the first rapid at 7:40 and couldn't decide what to do. Daniel and Ben decided to go down the flood water channel but didn't make it to the bottom. Steven and David had to help them keep the canoe above water, when Emma and myself arrived we helped pull the canoe to shore.

After that we portaged the canoes down.

When we had finally finished it was 10:00. We tried to hurry to get to Jackadgery on time. At 12:30 we had got to the bridge and were resting peacefully. At 5:30 Sandra and Penny arrived at 6:00 Bob pulled up with the trailer. We got the caneos on the trailer and left Jackadgery we got to Macca's in Grafton and had a huge feed. We arrived at Macksville Scout Hall 9:30pm and unpacked.

I would like to thank everyone that helped organise this weekend including Mr and Mrs Banks, Mr and Mrs Gray, Mr and Mrs Johnston, The Reintens especially Emma and everyone who helped with transport.

GREETINGS from the CALGARY 85TH SCOUTS

Our troop is participating in JOTI for the second time. Last year we were able to exchange email with 44 contacts from 14 different countries. This year will also try IRC - our nickname will be CALGARY85.

We live in Calgary, Alberta, Canada (51N 114W). To the west we see the majestic Canadian Rocky Mountains; to the east are the great Canadian Prairies. Calgary itself is located at the junction of two mountain rivers. This is the perfect place for high adventure scouting activities.

The troop includes 12 scouts (ages 11 to 13) and 4 leaders. We actively camp, canoe, climb, hike, bike, ski and skate. Winter offers extra challenges for temperatures can drop below minus 20 Celsius. This weekend the rest of the troop is camping at River Cove near Moose Mountain. They may try the steep climb up to the ice caves.

If you include your snail-mail address in your reply to us, we will send you a crest and postcard from our area as a momento of our contact. In your reply, could you please describe your best outdoor and indoor activity during the last year. Our best outdoor activity was a chilly winter camp in February high up in the mountains where we learned a lot about hypothermia. Our best indoor activity was having each scout build a solar-powered battery charger.

Our address is:

Murray Nicholson, Scout Leader

6223 Longmoor Way S.W.

Calgary, Alberta, Canada

We hope you have a great jamboree in cyberspace and look forward to your reply.

Hello, this is Troop 375 in Brookhaven, Mississippi USA. We have 20 boys in our troop and 10 are here at the church for the weekend of JOTA. We will be operating ham radio stations about 15:00 GMT. Hopefully we will be able to make e-mail and radio contact with Scouts all over the world.

Our troop tries to do an outdoor activity each month. We go on all the camporees and usually win the award for best in scout events. We have won several Best of Camporee awards. Our Troop is only 5 years old and most of the boys are 13 years or younger. We have one 14 year old and one 16 year old. We have two boys that are Life Scout and should be Eagle Scout in a few months.

Our troop is setting up a ham radio station. We will be operating a packet radio station and hope to get a weather satellite station in the next year or two.

We would like to hear from you.

Dragon Skin 96

What the is Dragon Skin:

Well when you organise 1200 Venturers, 800 Leaders and Rovers 4 VOC's (Venturer Overnight Campsites), 48 Activity Bases & 10 Km Forrestry. Youhave a Dragon Skin.

The Dragon Skin is run over the Easter Weekend.

The Rules:-

1) The Venturers must carry all of their camping gear for the duration.

2) They can only camp at a VOC once.

3) Bribery at bases with chocolates is encouraged.

Now the Dragon Skin from a Leader's point of view.

Friday 12:25 PM I arrived at VOC 1 to find organised chaos, Leaders going in all directions trying to complete their equipment for their respective bases. After sitting down to a full lunch, changing out of uniform, I joined the chaos.

I was positioned at base 107. It was called Bagheera's Peril, three skinny balloons surrounded one large balloon, the Venturers had to break the skinny balloons without breaking the large one from 5 metres away. Our first team through was Tim, Adam, Michael, and Ben.

VOC 1 consisted of 135 Leaders and Rovers, the dining area is about the size of Macksville Scout Hall, we had hot & cold running water, a large TV tent & a Disco, all o this is in the bush.

We had a backhoe, live in plumbers, & electrician, caterers, & large water tanks. The effort that is required to organise a Dragon Skin is enormous mand is very enjoyable. Next year's Dragon Skin is at Newens near Lithgow where we will do it all again.

Dave Banks Venturer Leader 1st Macksville

-----------------

Dragon Skin 96

Put 1500 youths between 15-18 years in the Walleroo State Forest on the Easter Long Weekend what have you got ??.. Fun and that's exactly what most people would use to describe the 13th Dragonskin in 1996. Dragonskin is a competition in which teams of 4, 5, or 6 Venturers run, or walk between activities which are spaced approximately 1 to 1.5 kilometres apart over challenging terrain. Most of the 258 teams go for fun and for entertainment provided by Rovers. Only about 50 teams and of that 20 teams are fiercely competitive. These teams generally run with 10 to 12 Kg on their back between bases. At the base they had to complete an activity which involved anything from First Aid to climbing ropes. Venturers were awarded points for teamwork, enthusiasm and initiative, other points are given for bribes and making total fools of themselves. Eight people from 1st Macksville Venturers went making one team of six (Mick Berry, Daniel Gray, Steven Chappell, Emma Reinten, David Begley, and Rebecca Sanger) and two Lones made a team of four (Tim Daelman, Ben White, Micheal Anderson, and Adam Morton). The all Macksville Team achieved honourably where as the combined team won and are State Champions defeating all of NSW and ACT as well as crack teams from Vic. and Qld.

Dragon Skin 96

Friday

On Friday just before the Easter Long Weekend a group of young (very Stupid) Venturers decided to have a gathering at the Scout hall at 5:00 AM to start a journey to an unknown place called Newcastle for a yearly event called Dragon Skin 96.

We set out on our trip down the wilds of the Pacific Highway in a beast called Dave's TROOPIE. We stopped at Eungai Rail to pick up some Troopee Groupies ( I mean more Venturers ). We then pushed on down the track to Newcastle with two or three wee stops on the way.

We finally arrived and took ten minutes to straighten up and stretch back to normal (well as normal as Venturers can be). We decided to check out the difference between city and country MACCA's. They turned out better looking MACCA's chicks. We were then given our instructions and map. We did a strip out of ouruniforms and into civvies and packed onto the buses, (the worst on the road)and headed off onto Hell's Highway (more bumps than the dodgem cars). Wewere dropped off to start hiking to our VOC (they must have thought the bus>wouldn't make it). We did some activities on the way and tried to put our tents up. There is nothing like putting pegs into solid rock!!

After checking out the site we had tea and got down to some serious dancing at the Disco.

Saturday

We all woke up to some clown saying "Good Morning Venturers" at 5:30 AM over the P.A. We think he wanted us up by the volume (REAL LOUD). Up and out the gate we went, and met up with some friends from last year who came from Greystanes. We travelled with them. A lot of sucking up was needed for points at the second VOC. We were met by a Rover called Billy the fish, (top bloke). This campsite was much better with soft grass and no rocks and better still more girls! We went to bed early as we were all stuffed (I mean we were very tired).

Sunday

I was woken up by someone at the disco yelling is Mick Berry awake, and as I stood up everyone was looking at me and the DJ said "Happy 18th Birthday Mick". Quickly escaping back into my tent from the onslaught of "Happy Birthdays" I wasn't the least bit embarrassed (much). We had a good day and talked about everything from my birthday to the great activities to Emma getting sick. We finally finished our last activity and returned to the VOC to make certain Emma was still alive and kicking. She felt much better and had met lots of new people.

That night we all made a lot of new friends and talked and danced all night. It was a great night for all.

Monday

We packed up and said goodbye to all our friends and headed bach on Hell's Highway to Newcastle. We learnt that our other team of Morty, Ben, Micheal, and Tim had won the "Dragon Skin" WHAT AN EFFORT GREAT WORK GUY'S We returned home safe (THANKS DAVE) and well and had a great time, made new friends, and enjoyed the brother and sisterhood of Scouting.

G'day my name is Dave. I am a Venturer leader at 1st Macksville Scout group. During the weekend of the 16th and 17th November I will be running Area Venturer at the Nymboida Canoe Centre. The weekend's activities will be based on white water canoeing on grade 1 &2 rapids. I am anticipating all Venturers will enjoy themselves. Any Venturers wishing to participate >should contact me on 065 647175. Below is an extract from the note that was sent to all the North Coast Venturers giving all details of this activity.

Area Venture '96 16-17th November 1996 Canoeing

I would like to apologise for the delay in information for Area Venture. During the October long weekend 6 (six) 1st Macksville Venturers completed their Venture Award Expeditions, starting at Buccarumbi and finishing at Jackadgery. Upon completion the Venturers advised me that the section from Buccarumbi to Ramorney (Area Venture) was very boring. After consultation with the Venturers I thought that it may be better to go to Goolang Creek >(Nymboida Canoe Centre). Goolang Creek is situated 35 Km from Grafton on the Ebor Road, just short of the township of Nymboida. The canoe centre is on the edge of the road so no 4WD is necessary.

You will Need to Bring.

All meals (waterproof Saturday Lunch).

Own Canoes,

Suitable footware at all times,

Helmet (bike helmet will do),

Life Jacket,

Sunglasses,

Spare paddle per canoe,

One Bailing Bucket per canoe,

Our troop, Troop 41 in N.J., USA is interested in the differences in scouting in other countries from scouting in the USA. We know that some of the ranks are different and would like to here about that. In the US the ranks in Boy Scouts start out with Scout then Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, Life, and Eagle. The first four ranks deal with the basics for scouting and camping like first aid, map and compass, etc.

We are also interested in starting a patch collection from scoutind around the work and think this woud be a great opportunity to do so. If you are interested we will trade one of our patches for one of yours. E-mail us at [PFGN23A@prodigy.com].

Subject: Overview of Australian Scouting (long)

Date: Sat, 19 Oct 1996 12:09:30 -0500

In answer to the above question, here is an overview of badges, uniforms and the award scheme for Cubs, Scouts and Venturers in Australia. There have been some recent changes in cubs that I am not 100% familiar with, but everything I have described here is still current. I have had very little to do with Rovers and so I will say nothing about their award scheme here other than that the highest award in Rovers (and therefore, the highest award available in scouting in Australia) is the Baden-Powell award. Our other scouting section, Joey Scouts, do not actually have awards or uniforms as such. Their uniform is the group scarf worn with a special Joey scout woggle (although most Joey mobs that I know also have a group or mob t-shirt that is worn as a sort of uniform) I have also attached a zip that shows the Queen's Scout and Venturer Award badges, a picture of a scout that gives some idea of the styling of our uniforms, and the Australian Scouts logo.

Cubs (8-11)

Bronze, Silver and Gold Boomerang - 2.5" by 1" rectangle, dark green background with boomerang in appropriate colour. There are also "Achievement" badges that are interest badges.

Scouts (11-14)

Pioneer, Explorer, Adventurer. Circular badge about 2.5" diameter in red (P) blue (E) or green (A) with yellow fleur-de-lis and white lettering below >with name of badge level. To qualify, must earn three "Target" badges in appropriate level; Citizenship, Campcraft and one other. Look at http://www.fcollins.com.au/Scouts/victoria/vaward.html; it shows the requirements and badges for citizenship and campcraft (the rest is "under construction") and the names of the other target and challenge badges.

Challenge badges are more generalised "interest" badges. In addition to the Pioneer etc., there are "cords" in the appropriate colour (a braided lanyard worn on the left shoulder); to qualify for these you have to earn a "Patrol Activity" badge, the relevant award level and an appropriate number of challenge badges (1 for red cord, three for blue, five for green). An extra patrol activity or "bar" to the patrol activity badge is required for each level (i.e. green cord requires patrol activity badge and two bars)

Venturers (14-18)

Discovery Award - Venturer Award (square badge 2" square - maroon background with venturer symbol surrounded by yellow laurel wreath.

Queen scout - Also an optional award "Major Interest"

There are eight activity areas for Venturer Award and Queen Scout, plus Initiative (VA) and Leadership (QS) courses; for each of these there is a badge. These badges are about 2.5" long, .5" high, maroon for venturer award level and green for queen scout level, with the name of the activity area embroidered in yellow.

Just a general description of what other badges we wear:

Left pocket: Purple world scout badge in middle, service stars (no longer stars; just a small square patch with the number of years in the appropriate colour.) and Australian Flag above pocket. In cubs and scouts sixer/PL stripes are worn either side of the world badge - one stripe on the left for seconder/APL (yellow stripe with green border for cubs, white stripe with khaki border for scouts)

Right Pocket: District badge in middle - see some examples of district badges (including my own Swan Valley) at >http://www.fcollins.com.au/Scouts/badges.html Above the pocket will be link badges (moving from joeys to cubs, cubs to scouts etc.) and other badges such as Scoutcraft (scouts) Discovery Award, Cub Instructor/Scout Helper (venturers) and activity badges like Jamboree badges, or local events)

Left Sleeve: Top of sleeve - six colour patch (cubs) or patrol emblem (scouts) Below that are where badges for major awards are worn (boomerangs - cubs; Pioneer etc. and Target badges - scouts; Venturer Award, Major Interest, Queen Scout (in that order bottom to top) - Venturers

Right Sleeve: Top of sleeve - Group name tape - .5" wide dark green tape with yellow lettering giving name of scout group (white with blue lettering for (blue uniform) sea scouts) Achievement badges (cubs), Challenge badges (scouts), Activity area badges (venturers), "special" badges at bottom of sleeve (first aid, Duke of Edinburgh award, radio, world conservation etc.)

Venturers also wear maroon epaulettes on their shoulder straps; leaders wear a 1.5" wide coloured loop on the shoulder strap indicating their appointment; tan - joeys, yellow - cubs; green - scouts; maroon - venturers; red - rovers; white - group leader; purple - commissioner

Our uniforms consist of Khaki short-sleeved collared shirt with "moss green" trousers or shorts. (Sea scouts wear the same style, but all in navy blue) We all wear scarves (BSA - neckerchiefs) with a wide variety of woggles (except for leaders who all wear the leather turks-head once they earn it.)

>Each group in W.A. has its own distinctive group scarf; ours (2nd Ballajura) is divided down the middle red and blue with a yellow band around the edge and blue or red band (depending on the background colour on that side of the scarf) inside the yellow band. All sections wear a brown leather belt (white for sea scouts) with a two piece buckle that shows the scout emblem and "Be Prepared". We wear a "moss green" colour "Johnson" hat (a style similar to traditional Australian "Akubra" hats - what Crocodile Dundee wears but with plaited leather band instead of crocodile teeth!) A cap has just been introduced and approved for wear with the uniform - looks nice with casual clothes but IMO seems out of place with the uniform. Black with "Scouts" in red script letters across the front and two red eyes (? beats me why!) on the back. There is also a similar cap for cubs, except it has wolf paws on the back, and on the front it says Cub Scouts with a wolf's head behind the letters.

Lijep pozdrav svima, or Hallo to everybody

I am Andrija Flanjak and my scout name is Apif. The name of my scout group is "JELEN". In English it minds = deer. I live in Zagreb, CROATIA, EUROPE, and for communication I prefer English language (or Croatian language !).My e-mail address is aflanjak@public.srce.hr In my scout group I'm leader, and we have boys and girls between 11 and 20 years old. We are doing really everything: camping, pioneering, hiking, trekking, many, many trips, etc. We were in Holand two times (1.European Jamboree and 18.World Jamboree). We wish to change our experiance and ideas from Croatia, with scout group from other country. I'm sure that there are many scouts who think the same like my, and we wait for your e-mail. I AM VERY INTERSTED IN THIS QUESTION: HOW YOU CELEBRATE THE THINKING DAY

You asked for a description of our best indoor and outdoor activities. Of course, being Venturers (which I think is about the same as Venturers in Canada) we don't do many indoor activities; we try to get out as much as possible (although perhaps you could count caving as indoor....)

Our most enjoyable outdoor activities in the past year were abseiling, caving and hiking. We do have a favourite indoor activity - a game the unit invented which we call "4 corners" It's not for the fainthearted; it can get pretty rough!

The way it workes is that in each corner of the room you have a chair with someone sitting on it. In the middle of the room a ball is dropped, and each person on a chair has to try and get the ball back to his chair. It's kinda like playing football one on one and having three other guys all against you. We did make a rule that you weren't allowed to actually _kill_ anyone, and also you could not damage their uniform (didn't say anything about not damaging the person though <G>)

Another favourite outdoor game is lantern stalk. This is a night wide game.

In case you don't play this, basically what you do is in an outdoors area place a lantern. There are two teams; one teams defends the lantern and the other tries to get to the lantern without being tagged by one of the defenders. Some people go for the stealthy approach, and use camouflage etc to try and sneak up without being seen; others rely on their skill in running and dodging. Lots of fun.

You also asked for snail-mail:

BTW, for us a camp in February would be the hottest part of summer. That time of year, if we camp at all it will always be near the beach or a river where we can swim. Our winters are extremely mild by your standards - it never snows at all. We experience a climate similar to what I understand the climate of southern California to be like.

Hi to everyone at Jota

My name is Matthew I belong to 6th Cheltenham scouts in Melbourne, Australia I have been doing scouts for about 1 term and I've been on one scout camp. i' ve got about 4 badges and they are scout craft, collector, citizenship and others! I go to scouts every thursday.

Have a good time!!

Hi Mat: What's your family name?

My name is Christopher SHERK of 1st Sherkston scouts in Port Colborne Ontario ,Canada . I have been in scouting for 7 years (Beaver, Cubs & Scouts, & I love it . I'm a devoted scout , and have 16 badges I don't have the time to name them, but I'm working on my Chief Scout Award. I have scouts every Wednesday night.

Please write back to me at my mother's e-mail address <hsherk@iaw.com> or care of my Scouter, whose e-mail I'm using right now. I need to write to fellow Scouts across the world over a 6-month period as a requirement for my Chief Scout Award. [Anyone else is welcome to write as well, please!]

I'm looking forward to the Canadian Jamboree at Thunder Bay, Ontario in July 1997 (at the head of the Great Lakes on Lake Superior).

You can learn more about it by going to Scouts Canada's homepage at <www.scouts.ca>.

Over the past 2 years, our Troop has been camping near Ottawa, the capital of Canada, for a week (about 350 miles north of Niagara).; and we've been canoeing, ice-fishing, winter camping at -20 C (-10 F), indoor rockwall climbing + tours of local industries (we watched 25,000 chickens being butchered).

This is a good activity, because it's raining & cold "Up Over" here in Niagara this afternoon. Most of our deciduous trees have changed colour and are losing their leaves in the rain.... Guess it must be summer in Melbourne. How hot is it? Windy? Big storms? How close are you to the Outback? Is it dangerous to go camping?

Hello Janne,

My name is Claude Vachon and I have been a scout since age 12. I am a Queen's Scout since 1964. I am now aged forty nine. Presently, I am a Rover Scout at le Clan 2e Les Aventuriers in Ottawa, Canada. I am serving my fourth year at the scout troupe 7e Les Éclairs of Plantagenet in Prescott County, Ontario.

I can communicate easily in both Français and English.

My E-mail address is: agrgalop@travel-net.com

I will be participating with four boy scouts of the troup 7e Les

Éclairs. This is a first experience for all of us.

With the Rover scouts, we have one outdoor hike per season. During this hike, we walk, meet people, do a good deed or service, reflect on a subjectchosen by one of us and pray. Besides this hike, we can meet for a community service such as distributing food to the needy, working at a soup kitchen for the homeless, driving people home at Christmas time to keep the highways safe(Operation Red Nose).

The scouts aged 12 to 17, practice scouting techniques while playing games and camping out. We have been canoeing in the Laurentian Mountain Range in Quebec Province just North of the Ottawa River. We climbed Mount Marcy in the Adirondacks(Appalachian Mountain range on the East coast of North America) in Upper New York State. We do rock climbing in the Gatineau Hills North of Ottawa. We are going camping in November in our County. This Winter, we plan to build quinzies and sleep under the snow. A quinzie is just a pile of snow that once hardened by the cold, is dug under to offer an exellent shelter against the wind and cold. The temperature inside can be 12 degrees warmer. We also sail on the St. Laurence River abord a 6.9 meters sailing yacht. This great river was the main highway of the New World and still today, permits us to better know our country and neighbours.

We are looking forward to making new friends and sharing scouting stories.

My profession is teaching physical education. I taught at the High School level for 24 years and am now teaching in pre-kindergarden, kindergarden, grade one and grade seven physical education.

Hello to all the Scouts around the world who have contacted me by email via Larry Cox. I am sorry that I have not been able to write individually to you all, but there are so many of you!

My name is Don Newing, and I am International Scout Commissioner for the County of Derbyshire, England. Derbyshire is in the Midlands of England. Our main city, Derby, is 120 miles north of London. I live in Belper, 8 miles north of Derby.

The southern and eastern parts of our county are industrial, but the centre and north are mostly open country. A large part of the county is in the Peak District National Park.

In Britain, we have four sections of Scouting, Beaver Scouts (aged 6 to 8), Cub Scouts (8 to 11), Scouts (11 to 1616), and Venture Scouts (16 to 20). We now allow boys and girls in scouting in all sections. There is also a Guide association, which is for girls only.

Our favourite activities in Derbyshire are camping, hill walking, and for the more adventurous rock climbing, caving, and canoeing (Kayaks). There is plenty of good walking country in the National Park, and also lots of popular climbing places, which in the summer attract Scouts from all over the country. Much of the land is formed of limestone, and there are lots of caves to explore for those who are properly trained and equipped. The Scouts of Derbyshire also run a rescue team to help find people who sometimes go missing in the wild country of the Peak National Park.

There are a number of Camp Sites for Scouts, and our local site, Drum Hill, is about 3 miles from my house.

Every 5 years, we organise a big international camp in the Peak District. The latest, Peak 95, was attended by over 7,000 Scouts and Guides, including over 600 from over 20 countries from all over the world. The next camp will be in 2000.

If you would like a Scouting pen friend in Derbyshire, please email me with your snail mail address after JOTI is over, and I will try and find somebody for you if I possibly can. If you would like information about the Peak 2000 camp, you can email me as well, and I will put you on our mailing list.

Best wishes

of the 7th & 8th The 1st Macksville Venturers set off for the ultimate buzz that some of us have had for a while. We left around 8:30am it wasn't a very thrilling trip to High Adventure Park. I think we got there around 11:00am. We started to get our lessons straight away after that stuntman (John Haddon) said I'll go first. The rides take around 15 min each. Then Bill Knaver from Kinchella went up, then I went up, Daniel Grey, Steve Banks, Michael Anderson, Bec Sanger, Ben White, David Begley, and Stacey Welsh was there but she didn't go up in the air. All of the air trips went over the beach and I saw some dolphins. Over the lake you hit some air pockets. Air pockets are when two differently directed gusts of wind hit and moves the microlite side to side.

Most of us done power dives over the beach. When you land, you can hardly feel it. That night most of us stayed up late and talked around the fire.

The next day we swam in the river which was very cold. Played in the canoes & sat around. Then packed up our tents and went to thank the High Adventure Park owner for the weekend. Then we went back home.

Venturer Canoe Weekend

It was a dark friday night when we packed the canoes onto the trailer and decided to leave for Goolang Creek to compete in the inaugral Canadian Canoe Classic.

We arived around ten o'clock that night at the Nymbioda Canoe Centre to unpack the gear and put up the tents.

The morning came quick and it took a while for most of us to wake up. We ate breakfast and got ready to head of to the end of C grade to be briefed on the race and were given a number so that our times could be recorded

We had the choice of starting at either one of three places on the river each shorter than the next. All the Vents decided to start at the top of the course which was at least 27km long.

So off we went to confront the river. we would start 30 seconds apart in numerical order. Mick Berry and myself had decided to paddle together and we were given the number 72 which would put us around the middle of the group but one of the first of the Canadian Canoes to leave.

Mick and I did well in the first part of the race only tipping once because we were to busy talking to two guy and didn't see the rock, this proving to be costly because it took us ages to catch up to them.

Dave gave us a tip about a little ally way beside a corner that would be sort of a short cut but little did we know there was two of these allys, the first one being about the same distance as the real route. But we finally came to the real ally which must have cut atleast five to ten seconds off our time.

After Rocky Rapid Mick and I knew it wasn't far to the end, so we paddled hard to finish first in our class. Macksville Vents also grabbed glory with Dave and Ben coming third.

The trip was very hard with the first part of it being more skill than anything and the second part was more endurance. Thanks to Mr Hull for organising the Bowraville School's Canoes and also for transport. I'd also like to thank Dave for organising the weekend and for getting the whole unit up there because without Dave a lot of our activities wouldn't run.

Henstock

On the 29-30th of March the Scouts went camping at Henstock Park. There were lots of activities including two wide games at night, searching for a bunny rabbit and when we found it we got an Easter egg, building a safety port for a flood using trees, poles and ropes, building a transporter where after we built we had races with a person sitting on it and a couple of other games. Basically, it was a camp to teach us more about Scouting. We all passed off a bit of badgework to which was good to. Thanks to the Leaders Skip, Kym, Sparra and Penny Gray, Greyskies, Sandra Begley and Mr Hall for helping at the camp. It was a lot of fun, even if the lively Scouts didn't get to bed until 1/2 past 2.

Canoeing Weekend (27/28th April)

Well once again a Venturer activity gets underway on time, it was organised for 7:15 PM leaving time wasn't it.

Daniel Gray, Steven Chappel, Michael Berry, Emma Reinten, Travis Reibel, Michael Anderson (Lone), David Begley, Kristie Lamberth, Miranda Elliot, Peter Hull, Sam Hull, Patricia Reinten, Bob Reinten, Karen Reinten, Debra Berry, Michael Johnston AVL, Debbie Johnston, Steele Johnston, Penny Gray,

Diane Banks, Peter Banks, Steven Banks and myself (Dave Banks) all set off with our first stop at Maccas at Coffs for a pleasant meal, the Venturers wanted to start a food fight but I would not permit this action because I wanted to start it.

Very little mess was made but a lot of fun was had. Next stop was Nymboida Canoe Centre on Goolang Creek, where tents were erected and sleep was had.

Saturday we awoke to a lovely day, we canoed C grade first then we canoed B grade & C grade. As the name suggests C grade is easy with all grade 1 rapids & B grade is mostly grade 2 rapids. The Venturers all performed very well. On Sunday we canoed B & C grade again. During one section called Gooseneck (a very difficult section) Steven Chapple and Miranda Elliott were the only ones who did not crash and burn.

Sunday arvo we boogy boarded in the stoppers, Peter Hull and myself tried to canoe Tennis Courts (a grade 3-4 section), we successfully completed the first five metres in the canoe, the remaining twenty metres was like being in your Mum's washing machine.

After packing up our gear we left heading for Dorrigo, the weather was wet and Brrrrr but we made it back to Macksville Scout Hall on time (7:30 PM). A big thanks goes to Peter Hull for organising the canoes from Bowraville Central School and Penny Gray and Diane Banks for organising the food.

Ebor Weekend

Ten 1st Macksville Venturers joined Coffs Harbour and Bellingen Venturers on the weekend at Ebor Falls where they enjoyed some rockclimbing and abseiling. It was great to see how much confidence has been achieved by most Venturers as they scrambled up and down the rock faces. Steven Chappel and Daniel Gray both showed their desire and ability when it came to rockclimbing and prusiking. The rockclimbing was pursued and set up by Michael Berry. Saturday night saw a game of fire ball soccer at the sportsground.

This weekend has been the end of an era for Michael Berry as he recently turned 18. Michael has enjoyed many years in Scouting, first in Cubs, then Scouts where he achieved his Green Cord, then onto Venturers where he has achieved his Queen Scout Award. Michael has gained much experience in Venturer activities such as canoeing, abseiling, caving, waterskiing, ropework, and the award scheme. Michael will be missed by the Venturer Unit as he will now pursue Rovers.

Many thanks must go to Penny, Wendy, Sandra, Ian and Diane for cooking and making a success of the weekend.

Hi all Scouts and Scouters

Hope you are all having a brilliant JOTI.

Here in Mildura, Victoria, Australia it is a beautiful Sunday morning, and the birds are singing in the trees. It is Spring, and the kangaroos are frolicking. We are at our DistrictScout Centre with Scouts, Cubs, Venturers and Leaders. Many of us stayed overnight.

I am interested in swapping country badges with any who are interested. We have a really cool Australian Scouts badge that features our flag. I would like to swap for your equivalent badge. Also your District or Area badges would be welcome too! Our District badge features a paddle boat and is very colourful.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Have a great weekend.

Dear Scout and Scouters,

I wanted to impose upon you one more time as a way of closing out this mail list for JOTA/JOTI. It has been very satisfying to have a part in getting people involved in Scouting together to share our experiences. My Scouts were excited at the mail they received from all over the world and I hope your experience was a positive one.

This has been a one person operation from the start and everything has been done by hand. I hope you continue to write to each other directly, but I will not be able to forward mail to individuals or to the group. Hopefully we will be able to get together again next year for an e-mail exchange. If my internet provider sets up a list server, I would like to start an automated mailing list that would allow me to talk to some of you.

I will finish sending out the mail that is still coming in as soon as I can. However, as I type this note it is time for me to go to work and I must wish each of you Good Scouting. I am enclosing my e-mail address and my postal address. I would very much like to hear from you on an individual basis in the future.
