The Official Club of Swedish Vallhund
in Sweden

The club started in 1976 as an unofficial breed club, called "Västgötaspetsringen"...
...within another club, containing a lot of breeds...
...associated with the Swedish Kennel Club...
...and became later on an official breed club, Specialklubben för Västgötaspets.
Mostly a club is supposed to be much bigger than ours to be an official breed club in Sweden, but as we are responsible of a genuine Swedish breed we have the right to be an official club.
Everybody, interested in our breed, is welcome as a member.

Within the club you can find many activities:

Herding test

...where you test if the dogs have the natural turn of herding as they are supposed to.
Sometimes there are "herding meetings" without any tests, just to talk and try herding.
Örjan Skoglund and Anki Ring are two of our members, who are very interested in herding. You can find their phone numbers in the Information page
.

Classifying meetings

...where we very closely judge the descendents from different matings. We then use a protocol, which consists of about 50 different points, which all together very exactly tell what a dog looks like.
The classifying meetings must not be compared to normal dog shows. There is no form af competition between the dogs and we never talk about "best" or "most beautiful". Every dog is just compared to the standard and described as a result of a specific combination of specimens.

Mental tests

...which has as their purpose to test the mental abilities of the dogs; how good they are at being exposed to mental strain and then still be able to get rid of it.
The mental tests are official and very important to get knowledge of the mental status of the breeding-stock.

Traing camps and -meetings

...to train herding, obedience and agility. Here we get the possibility of training ourselves and the dogs with help from our "experts".

Shows

...where the dogs are judged by show judges, and if they are good can become champions. Sometimes we also have unofficial shows were we take part just to have fun and to train the dogs and ourselves for "the real thing".

Breeding Committee

...which is a good thing when you need advice to find the right stud dog for your bitch. Even if the members of the committee are very knowledgeable, they can never, as any breeder knows, guarantee the result of any matings. But they can certainly help you to avoid some mistakes.

Puppy Recommendation
Committee

...where you find the people who know where there are puppies for sale. They never recommend a breeder or a kennel before another; they just tell where there are puppies for the moment. On the other hand there are requirements, that the breeders are supposed to fullfill if they want to stay on the "recommendation list".

The Club Magazine VÄSTGÖTASPETSEN

...is very important to the club. It´s the greatest link between board and members, made and distributed four times a year.
Our editor makes a great job, often under time pressure, and certainly needs help from the members with material to the magazine.

The club´s most important task is to work for our breed, so it will remain the strong and healthy breed it is. To do this the club must have good relationships with the society and with other organizations, mainly our "mother club"
