Ska

A short introduction to ska music

The Ska and reagge music was brought to UK in the 60īs by young jamaicans. These young jamaicans clashed together with young white british workingclass kids called "mods". Mods were a typical post war subculture, revolting against everything. Wearing nice clothes and being "modern" (therefor the name īmodī") was the core in this subculture. Mods started to listen to ska and took after their black brothers. Many jamaicans were Rudeboys, a rudeboy is a person who listens to ska, reagge, jazz and soul. They can be easily recongnized by their clothes. A black suit with a white shirt with a black tie on it. On their head they have a black "gangster" hat named porkpie (nowadays these hats can also be found on traditional skinheads). Their style was looking very much as the gangsters in USA when Al Capone was around. They fighted alot also. Therefor they got the name "Rudeboy". Mods got many influences by these Rudeboys. Many ska songs are written about these rudeboys, desmond dekker and jimmy cliff is two of the ones who wrote alot lyrics about them. Famous ska/reagge bands were: The Pioneers, Judge Dread, laurel Aitken, Desmond Dekker and many more. The Rudeboys and mods were together now but somewhere in this gutter some more aggressive mods called "hard mods" started to dislike the other mods hippie influences and their total love for fashion. These cutted their hair shorter and shorter too take a stand against middleclass mods and hippies. Another reason for the cropped hair was that many jamaicans had it too. And the hair was perfect in a fight. Now they were skinheads. These kids had evalutaed out from the mod culture and started something new. The first Skinhead wave was here and in ī69 it was on its top.

In the end of the 70īs a new wave of Ska came from UK. This was 2-tone. It was a faster type of ska with more white artists. Bands as Madness, The Specials, Bad Manners, Arthur Kay & The Orginals, The Loafers and Selecter were these new bands to make people come to dancehalls and dance. The 2-tone era ended short after, but never died. Now we have many bands playing 2-tone ska, one of them are the Skalatones from Landskrona. But many new band play a much faster punk influed kinda ska called 3rd-wave ska. Some bands are Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Rancid and Liberator In the late '90s there was a ska revival, and many new bands started. these days many kids have heard ska music and know some about it, atleast of the so called 3rd-wave punk/ska.

If you never heard ska music or dont know a shit about it, you must go down to your local record store and ask them about some ska records, 'cause I promise you that you'll love it.....
