The alto guitar is a construction of the Swedish guitarmaker Georg Bolin and music prof. Per-Olof Johnson. With the alto guitar the renaissancemusic, written for lute or vihuela, can be played with guitartechnique and without transcription.
The alto guitar is tuned as a renaissancelute, g-d-a (a#)-f-c-G /F-Eb-D-C-H. Strings 6-11 is standard E6. The usual scale is 570-590mm. The alto guitar is build with a deeper body than a classical guitar.
The swedish guitarplayer Göran Söllscher has made the alto guitar worldwide known with his excellent recordings of J.S Bach lute suites.
