Now there is a dystopian
theatre! It's called Solent People's Theatre
and is located in Portsmouth, UK. Recently, they performed an
adaptation for the stage of Brawe New World, possibly the first one
ever; Huxley's widow gave it her blessing. Check out the
theatre's homepage, and Culture
Wars' review of the adaptation.

A futurist conference
called Future Vision: Future Cities will
be held in London 06 DEC. Many interesting utopian and dystopian
items, e.g. "From Dystopia to Myopia: Metropolis to Blade
Runner". Seems to be well worth a visit, especially if you
live in the UK. PDF brochure

NOW 2002
Yet another adaptation of H.G.
Well's classic alien invasion novel War of the
Worlds will hit the silver screen. This time, the
story is set in England at the turn-of-the-century as in the novel. Judging from the press kit which has been sent to Exploring
Dystopia, it might be an interesting movie, possibly excellent. War
of the Worlds will be released in the summer 2004.
Philip K. Dick is still popular in
Hollywood. The short story Paycheck
will be turned into a movie starring Ben Affleck. Doesn't sound
promising, but you never know.
If we don't act soon, we will have
to face an increasingly dysfunctional global society. This is
actually the conclusion of the latest World
Bank report! It seems even the capitalist elite is beginning
to see the danger. Read more about the report in Guardian
Unlimited.
The Cyberpunk Information Database,
the most comprehensive cyberpunk database ever, is finally back
on-line. Thanks to Michael
and Syber for the discovery. Make sure to check it out; it's well worth your
time.
Although it's old news, you might
want to read the on-going Blade
Runner Interactive Story on BRmovie.com.
It's an innovation in fan fiction: a co-operative project in which
any fan can participate at any time.
Terminator
3 will hit the theatres in May 2003. There is already an official
site available on-line and, needless to say, there are plans
for a Terminator 4.

AUG 2002
The sequel mania continues in
Hollywood and dystopian movies are no exceptions. If you have managed
to miss it, Terminator
3 is under production. It will probably hit the theatres
in 2003 under the title Terminator 3: The Rise
of the Machines.
Mel Gibson is interested in making a Mad Max 4;
concidering his star status, it's not impossible the project will be
realised. He has also been interested in a remake of Fahrenheit
451 for many years now. The difference is that he sounds
quite confident about it now...
15 JUL 2002
The long
awaited adaptation of Philip K Dick's novel Impostor,
starring Gary Sinise and Madeline Stowe, has finally reached
Europe. Unfortunately, it went straight to video in most
countries. Note: The video release bears the title Enemy
of the Earth in some countries.
24 MAY 2002
A Matrix: Reloaded
teaser trailer is now available. Not exactly a prediction of a sunshine
future this time either. Keep yourself updatet at What
is the Matrix?.
Francis Ford Coppola has been working on
an interesting project for a while now. Working title: Megalopolis.
The story in a nutshell: a utopian city project turns into a veritable
dystopia. It has been said he will be spending the conciderable incomes
from his vineyards in the project; hopefully he will be in full command.
Keep yourself updated at Upcoming
movies's megalopolis page; lots of interesting information.
21 MAY 2002
A new sci-fi TV series will air on FOX
this autumn: Firefly. The story takes place
600 years into future: a mix of space opera and western movies. The
preview photos are looking promising: worn-down, slightly tech noir
oriented design. Keep yourself updated at
Fireflyfans.net.
10 MAY 2002
A dystopian movie called Equilibrium
has been on its way for a long time now. Christian Bale plays a
special agent in a totalitarian society where the expression of
feelings has been declared illegal. "Equilibrium" is
supposed to be the name of a drug which surpresses feelings. Many
different release dates have been announced the past two years; the
last was March 2002.
If you have managed to miss it, a new
release of Blade Runner is coming up
in 2003; the exact release date is yet to be announced. There are strong
indications it will be a 3-disc release with possibly as many as four
different versions, as well as lot of interviews and artwork.
Keep yourself updated at BRmovie.com.
Cyborgs are no longer just a
cyberpunk fantasy. At Oxford University experiments have been
performed on a human being: the subject's nervous system was
succesfully linked to a computer. Read more about it in this CNN
news article.
Philip K. Dick is hot property in
Hollywood nowadays. The most notable project is Steven Spielberg's
adaptation of the short story Minority Report.
Large budget, lots of special effects and Tom Cruise in the lead role.
Premise: In the future, new technology will allow the police to detect
crimes before they are committed. Release date: June 21st, 2002.
A new Blade Runner
Forum can be found at Blade Runner Insight.
Functional, yet elegant design. Make sure to check it out: Blade
Runner Insight Forum. Yours truly will probably be spending all too
much time there in the future.
