Now there is a dystopian theatre! It's called Solent People's Theatre and is located in Portsmouth, UK. Recently, they performed an adaptation for the stage of Brawe New World, possibly the first one ever; Huxley's widow gave it her blessing. A futurist conference called Future Vision: Future Cities will be held in London 06 DEC. Many interesting utopian and dystopian items, e.g. "From Dystopia to Myopia: Metropolis to Blade Runner". Seems to be well worth a visit, especially if you live in the UK. PDF brochure

20 NOW 2002

Yet another adaptation of H.G. Well's classic alien invasion novel War of the Worlds will hit the silver screen. This time, the story is set in England at the turn-of-the-century as in the novel. Judging from the press kit which has been sent to Exploring Dystopia, it might be an interesting movie, possibly excellent. War of the Worlds will be released in the summer 2004.

Philip K. Dick is still popular in Hollywood. The short story Paycheck will be turned into a movie starring Ben Affleck. Doesn't sound promising, but you never know.

If we don't act soon, we will have to face an increasingly dysfunctional global society. This is actually the conclusion of the latest World Bank report! It seems even the capitalist elite is beginning to see the danger. Read more about the report in Guardian Unlimited.

Although it's old news, you might want to read the on-going Blade Runner Interactive Story on BRmovie.com. It's an innovation in fan fiction: a co-operative project in which any fan can participate at any time.

Terminator 3 will hit the theatres in May 2003. There is already an official site available on-line and, needless to say, there are plans for a Terminator 4.

The sequel mania continues in Hollywood and dystopian movies are no exceptions. If you have managed to miss it, Terminator 3 is under production. It will probably hit the theatres in 2003 under the title Terminator 3: The Rise of the Machines.

Mel Gibson is interested in making a Mad Max 4; concidering his star status, it's not impossible the project will be realised. He has also been interested in a remake of Fahrenheit 451 for many years now. The difference is that he sounds quite confident about it now...

The long awaited adaptation of Philip K Dick's novel Impostor, starring Gary Sinise and Madeline Stowe, has finally reached Europe. Unfortunately, it went straight to video in most countries. Note: The video release bears the title Enemy of the Earth in some countries.

Francis Ford Coppola has been working on an interesting project for a while now. Working title: Megalopolis. The story in a nutshell: a utopian city project turns into a veritable dystopia. It has been said he will be spending the conciderable incomes from his vineyards in the project; hopefully he will be in full command. 21 MAY 2002

A new sci-fi TV series will air on FOX this autumn: Firefly. The story takes place 600 years into future: a mix of space opera and western movies. The preview photos are looking promising: worn-down, slightly tech noir oriented design. Keep yourself updated at Fireflyfans.net.

A dystopian movie called Equilibrium has been on its way for a long time now. Christian Bale plays a special agent in a totalitarian society where the expression of feelings has been declared illegal. "Equilibrium" is supposed to be the name of a drug which surpresses feelings. Many different release dates have been announced the past two years; the last was March 2002.

If you have managed to miss it, a new release of Blade Runner is coming up in 2003; the exact release date is yet to be announced. There are strong indications it will be a 3-disc release with possibly as many as four different versions, as well as lot of interviews and artwork. Keep yourself updated at BRmovie.com.

Cyborgs are no longer just a cyberpunk fantasy. At Oxford University experiments have been performed on a human being: the subject's nervous system was succesfully linked to a computer. Read more about it in this CNN news article.

Philip K. Dick is hot property in Hollywood nowadays. The most notable project is Steven Spielberg's adaptation of the short story Minority Report. Large budget, lots of special effects and Tom Cruise in the lead role. Premise: In the future, new technology will allow the police to detect crimes before they are committed. Release date: June 21st, 2002.
