The Band setlists

---

The Band - "Crossing the Great Divide. The Genuine Bootleg Series Vol. 4"

various live and unreleased 1964-1991. 58 tracks, 70:29/68:04/70:52, 3 CDR. Quality varies.

More info on The Band web site

Disc 1 - What a Party

The Hawks with Levon Helm on vocals, September 18, 1961:
1. What A Party / 2. Farther Up The Road / 3. She's Nineteen

Levon & The Hawks, Texas, 1964:
4. You Don't Know Me

The Canadian Squires, 45 single, 1964:
5. Leave Me Alone

Levon & The Hawks, 45 single, Atco, 1965:
6. He Don't Love You / 7. The Stones I Throw

Bob Dylan and the Hawks, studio out-take, Sunset Studios, Los Angeles, November 30, 1965:
8. Number One

Bob Dylan and the Hawks, Manchester, May 17,1966:
9. Baby, Let Me Follow You Down

The Hawks, Big Pink, 1967 (*: w/ Bob Dylan):
10. I'm Your Teenage Prayer * / 11. Ruben Remus (instrumental) / 12. Yazoo Street Scandal I / 13. You Say You Love Me I / 14. You Say You Love Me II / 15. Orange Juice Blues (instrumental) / 16. Instrumental / 17. Come All Ye Fair & Tender Ladies * / 18. Beautiful Thing I / 19. Beautiful Thing II / 20. Orange Juice Blues / 21. Instrumental II * / 22. Ferdinand The Imposter / 23. If I Lose / 24. Bacon Fat (inc.)

Disc 2 - The Crackers, "Time To Kill"

1. Katie's Been Gone / 2. Ruben Remus / 3. Yazoo Street Scandal II

The Band outtakes, Bearsville Studios, 1969: (Levon's book says the The Band outtakes were at The Hit Factory, and also seems to imply that maybe one of the cuts was actually recorded in California, see pp. 194-195.)
4. Get Up Jake / 5. Baby, Don't You Do It

Woodstock, August 19, 1969: (Woodstock was 17th of August 1969, not 19th as the bootleg says. Also of note is that the source tape changes to a different one at 00:01:41 in middle of "Don't Ya Tell Henry.")
6. Don't Ya Tell Henry / 7. Tears Of Rage

Bob Dylan & The Band, Isle Of Wight, August 31, 1969:
8. Highway 61 Revisited

Hollywood Bowl October 7, 1970: (Hollywood bowl is 10th July, not 7th October. This is a mistake from an old Italian bootleg that got the US month/day switched with their day/month syntax.)
9. The Night They Drove ol' Dixie Down / 10. Across The Great Divide

Rock of Ages outtakes, December 31, 1971:
11. Up On Cripple Creek / 12. The Rumor / 13. Time To Kill / 14. Strawberry Wine / 15. Rockin' Chair / 16. This Wheel's On Fire / 17. Smoke Signal / 18. I Shall Be Released

Disc 3 - The Band, "Share Your Love"

1. Caledonia Mission / 2. Loving You (Is Sweeter Than Ever)

Roosevelt Stadium, NJ, August 1973: (The Roosevelt stadium cut is probably from 31 July, the 1 August show tape does not have that song, that is about the only difference between those two shows.)
3. Share Your Love

Bob Dylan & The Band, Planet Waves outtakes, November 1973:
4. Instrumental Jam / 5. Crosswind Jamboree

Madison Square Garden, January 31, 1974:
6. King Harvest / 7. Rag Mama Rag / 8. This Wheel's On Fire

The Last Waltz, Winterland, November 25, 1976:
9. It Makes No Difference / 10. Baby, Don't You Do It

Osaka August 29, 1983:
11. Long Black Veil

Levon Helm & Bob Dylan, Lone Star Cafe, May 29, 1988:
12. The Weight / 13. Nadine

1991 Jericho demos:
14. Blind Willie McTell / 15. Atlantic City / 16. Soul Deep

Disks 1&2: "A Phoenix In April"

Sydney, Australia, 13 April 1966:
-She Belongs To Me/4th Time Around/Visions of Johanna/It's All Over
Now, Baby Blue/Desolation Row/Just Like A Woman/Mr. Tambourine Man

-Tuning/Tell Me, Momma/I Don't Believe You/Baby Let Me Follow You
Down/ Tom Thumb's Blues/Leopard Skin PillBox Hat/One Too Many Mornings/
Ballad Of A Thin Man/Positively Fourth Street

Source: From the CDR that was sourced from the original reel-to-reels.
Far superior to any versions previously circulating with more
punch and dynamics, brighter and fuller sound. (Previously
circulating copies sourced from 100-minute cassette tape>MP3).

Somewhat disapponting is the fact that through an error of omission, the
intermission between the acoustic and electric sets has not been
included. The full 2min-30sec before the electric set when the Hawks and
Dylan emerge individually is intact.

However, having the intermission, w/ the vendors vending and folks
milling around, while short of compelling (:-) ), is actually pretty cool. I
will attempt to get burns made of the intermission and provide them down the line (gratis, of course).

Lastly, the electric portion of Sydney, if you have yet to hear it, is
an Hutguyty7t656hrtrutr8tu4r8548te458485et7tret7yer8t5tyfhtrIncredibly
energetic and intense vocal performance by Dylan....perhaps the most
manic vocal performance of all.

Plus Adelaide, Australia Interview 22 April 1966

-She Belongs To Me/4th Time Around/Visions of Johanna/It's All Over

Baby Let Me Follow You Down/Tom Thumb's Blues/Adelaide Interview 10+

Source: Remastered from the long gone, original Wanted Man release
WM-023, acknowledged as the finest-quality source recording.
Fantastic!!!

Adelaide interview from radio braodcast dub......way cool.

Disk 4: "While the Establishment Burns"

Dublin, Ireland, 5 May 1966
plus
Copenhagen, Denmark, KB Hallen Hall, 01 May 1966
Edinburgh, Scotland, ABC Theater, 20 May 1966

Dublin: Visions of Johanna/Fourth Time Around/It's All Over Now,
Baby Blue/Desolation Row/Just Like A Woman/Mr. T Man/I Don't
Believe You

Source: Nagra reel-reel source....superior to previously acknowledged
best-quality Dublin found on the 1989 Italian Bulldog release.

Not on the same level as the Sheffield or the other
acoustic sets but still a darn good recording, plus the electric "I
Don't Believe You."

Copenhagen (KB Hallen Hall): Ballad Of A Thin Man
Source: "Eat the Document"....excellent.

Edinburgh: One Too Many Mornings/Like A Rolling Stone
Source: 1st-generation dub from reel-reel of the WNEW-FM, NYC, broadcast
of these two tracks from the early 70's. Flat out the most frenetic,
manic and high-powered versions of those two cuts. Ear cleaners......

Disk 5&6: "A Nightly Ritual"

Liverpool, UK, 14 May 1966 & Glasgow,
Scotland Hotel Room, 19 May 1966 (Disk 5).

Liverpool: Tell Me, Momma/I Don't Believe You/Baby Let Me Follow You
Down/Tom Thumb's Blues/Crowd/Leopard Skin PillBox Hat/One Too Many Mornings/Ballad Of A Thin Man/Like A Rolling Stone/God Save the Queen

Source: Nagra recording......incredible sound and performance, Robbie
is off-the-wall great. Previously uncirculating

Glasgow: What Kind of Friend Is This?/I Can't Leave Her Behind
1&2/Does She Need Me (On A Rainy Afternoon)
Source: Low generation tape

Sheffield acoustic: She Belongs To Me/4th Time Around/Visions/It's
All Over Now, Baby Blue/Desolation Row/Just Like A Woman/Mr.
Tambourine Man

Source: 3-track master tape...easily the finest quality of circulating
acoustic shows (incl/Manchester) and a haunting, otherwordly
performance.
Previously uncirculating and truly incredible
sound/performance.

Sheffield electric: Leopard Skin PillBox Hat/One Too Many Mornings
Source: Nagra reel-reel source

Birmingham: Ballad Of A Thin Man
Source: Nagra reel-reel source

Disk 7&8 : "The Genuine Royal Albert Hall Concerts" -

Manchester, UK, 17 May 1966 from original 3-track tape:

She Belongs To Me/4th Time Around/Visions of Johanna/It's All Over Now,
Baby Blue/Desolation Row

(Don't ask me why this was included.......I have no clue).
Different "feel" than either "Guitars" or "RAH" but certainly not
enough to warrant inclusion here.

Royal Albert Hall, London, UK, 26 May 1966 from 1st-generation Gelston
acetate dub/remastered:

She Belongs To Me/4th Time Around/Visions of Johanna/Leopard Skin
PillBox Hat/One Too Many Mornings/Ballad Of A Thin Man/Like A Rolling
Stone

(Excellent grab from a 1st-gen tape off the acetate, though there is a
drop-out 00:20 into "She Belongs To Me" and at the beginning of "Just
Like A Woman."

Other than that, the smoothest, quietest sound, superior to the previous
hard-to-find- classic "Before the Crash" volume that contained this
material.

Royal Albert Hall, London, UK, 27 May 1966
from 1st-generation Gelston acetate dub/remastered (see above)

She Belongs To Me/4th Time Around/Visions of Johanna/It's All Over Now,
Baby Blue/Desolation Row/Just Like A Woman/Mr. Tambourine Man
Again, cleaner, smoother and quieter than "Before the Crash."

WBAI Radio, Jan. 19, 1966 from radio:
A Midwinter's Night's Scene - Dylan interview and taking calls...10+
minutes of Dylan talking. Off-the-wall entertaining.

Notes: I received this show as "The Hawks, 1964", with no further information. This is the Port Dover show from 1964 Levon describes in detail in his book (see pages 110-112, 1st ed). However, I'm not quite sure about the date, as it is not given in the book. The setlist match that of the July 12 -64 in the Tape Archive reasonably well, but not exactly ("If You Leave Me" and "Bring It On Home" are missing here, and the "Memphis Tennessee" is not in right place). The setlist agrees with Levon's description up to "Georgia" (which ended the show according to the book), except the order of "You Cant' Sit Down" and "No Particular Place To Go" is reversed. All the stage-talk and announcements made by Levon match the description in his book.

It could be that this is a compilation of more than 1 show (there is two different versions of "Woman Love and a Man", and further, the sound quality varies a bit). It could also be that the Tape Archive has some errors in the setlist. If anyone can provide any information on this, please let me know.

Lots of hiss (I haven't done any digital noise reduction, as I'm not a big fan of that), and the sound quality varies a bit, but I think this is mostly listenable. As compared to the Port Dover tracks on "Old Shoes", this version has more hiss, but the sound is brighter and more clear here.

But, seriously, can it get any better than The Hawks in 1964??? A killer show.
