THE ROYAL CANADIAN MOUNTED POLICE

A gang of wolfhunters returned via Cypress Hills to their camp at Fort Benton when their horses were stolen. They spent the night at Farwell's and Solomon's trading posts where also 200 Assiniboine indians camped. The wolfhunters suspected the indians to be the ones who had stolen the horses, which never could be proved. They drank a lot of whiskey that night and early in the morning the wolfhunters attacked the indians and killed 30 of them. The following day both Farwell's and Solomon's trading posts were burned. This became the start of the creation of a mounted police corps whos duty was to watch over the large Northwest territory.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) was founded on the 23rd of May 1873 by Canadas first prime minister Sir John A McDonald. It was then named "The North West Mounted Police" whos duty was to keep law and order in the Northwest territory of Canada (todays Alberta and Saskatchewan). The RCMP got red uniforms to show their belonging to England and not be mixed up with the US Army who had blue uniforms. In the beginning they were about 300 men and today they are 16.000. They were organized like a British cavalry regiment. The first things to do was to negotiate with the indians and to watch over American whiskey traders in the area. Together with the Blackfoot chief Crowfoot and other indian leaders they managed very well to keep law and order on the plains.
