[2001 - 2003]
The engine is a Fiat 1756 Twincam from a Fiat 124 Coupeī. I payed 500 SEK (50 Euro) for engine, gearbox and
driveshaft. Pretty good price, wasnīt it?? The engine is the most powerful of the 124-engines: 120 hp at 6900rpm. Nice...
In the garage the engine was stripped for inspection. Everything was in a surprisingly good shape, considering
that the engine probably is from 1975, or maybe 1976. I discovered some small cracks in 3:rd cylinder walls.
Could it be freeze cracks, and was this the reason why the car was taken to the yard? Questions without
answers, so i simply made a slight honing of the cylinder to see if the cracks perhaps was only in the surface.
The cracks almost disapeared so i hope itīs not as bad as i thought. Time will tell...
Earlier iīve had a SAAB 900 Turbo, who unfortunately was eaten by the rust monster. Before it was transported to
junk yard i saved the turbo, the injection system and som other parts. Could it be possible to use the turbo and
injection on the Fiat engine?

Anyway, i put in new piston rings, bearings, gaskets and cambelt. When i was at it, i also lightened the flywheel,
made some slight porting of the cylinder head and polished the valves. Many thanks to Guy Croft for sharing his knowledge
and answering my questions. Very nice book, by the way!
First i had to do something about the CR. 9,8:1 is not good for turbo so after a bit of thinking i
decided to modify the pistons by remove 1,6mm from the top. This gives a CR of 8,5:1. Much better!
Itīs probably not possible to register the car with a turbo engine (regulations say max. 15kW /100kg car weight.)
so i had to use a carburetor, or the injection without turbo. The engine had the carburetor missing, so i
bought a Weber 32/36 DGAV from the same junk yard for 100 SEK (10 Euro). The guy doesnīt know how to charge...
When i test-mounted the engine in the frame i thought it was rather high. I checked with the hood and both the
camwheels and the carburetor would point out on top of the hood! A scoop could take care of the camwheels,
but the carb was another story. I think itīs so ugly to have carb and air filter sticking out above the hood,
so i decided to go for the injection. Itīs a Bosch CIS (K-jetronic) mechanical injection so it should
be possible to adjust for the Fiat engine.
Inlet manifold has to be modified.
CIS has one injector for each inlet pipe, so i have to add injector holder to the manifold.
But after a lot of thinking i decided it would be a pitty to modify the original inlet manifold. I have read
that some people think that the 1756 manifold is the best ever made for Fiat TCīs.
Maybe it will be a valuable piece one day.
