I have researched my family roots since 1995 and I find it very interesting. Before I started, I had no any experience as to where to start or where to acquire information. The only thing I knew was who my grandmother and grandfather were, not much more.

The common way to start is to interview the older family members, milking them for interesting details and stories from the past, such as names, places, etc. But in my case, I only had my mother and aunt to consult, since the other family members were deceased. Those first two interviews gave me a few clues and got me started on my research. This research led me to different parts of Sweden, i.e. Skåne, Blekinge, Småland, and Gotland.

It proved easy to reach the early 1800´s, but after that point, problems began to arise. By chance, I happened to read the project page at netzine Rötter (Root's) and at that site checked whether anyone was doing any research on Gotland. My link to Gotland turned out to be a schoolteacher named Karl August Palmqvist born in Eke parish 1839.

BINGO! A lady presented her own and her sisters' research from registered church records in databases. Eke was among the parishes they’d been researching. I contacted her and she was willing to run Karl August through her databases.

After a few days I received a reply from her by e-mail. Her message included 21 pages of information about my ancestors. In some cases, the information went 10 generations back from Karl August Palmqvist. One was a circuit judge born in Gröttlingbo in about the year of 1515.

Since the Palmqvist family is a branch of my family, I sent her information about his siblings and after a few days I received her reply. We were related through her mother and myself, i.e. sixth cousins. Not what you would normally call family ties but this had been an interesting episode proving what you can achieve when you share your information with other researchers on the web.

We’ve also carried out a rather complete research on my wife’s family, which goes back to the early 1700' hundreds and on some branches even further back in time. Her mother’s family comes from Jämtland and her father's family comes from Småland. We’ve postponed the research on her family for the time being.

I will be showing the results of my research as I find time to do so.

Genealogy programs
I will limit myself to programs in Swedish and Windows enviroment . The list is in no way compete.

Anarkiv

The program that I use and consider the best!!!! ;-)

Win Family

Win Family is a Danish program and is available in French, English and all Scandinavian languages.

MinSläkt

MinSläkt is a new Swedish program that was developed in 1996. The program is compatible with Windows 95 and NT and handles genealogical data very efficiently. It is available in Swedish only.

DIS-Gen

The DIS-Gen program has been developed by DIS and is sold to members only.

Evaluation demos of all the programs can be downloaded. The demo versions of the Win Family and DIS-Gen programs allow only limited use. A full 3.3 version can be downloaded from the Anarkiv page. The program contains no limitations for its use but as a free version it lacks support.

All programs can generate HTML codes of some sort for publishing your results on the web.

Min Släkt does not include any limitations, however, there is a nagging flag that pops up ever so often telling you to purchase the program. The price is very affordable.

Here are the ancestral trees of my wife’s father and mother and of my own father and mother.

The tree of my wife's mother has been drawn up using traditional research methods and with the help of other researchers on the web, among these ar Björn Espell. Björn has done a great job in Jämtland.

An older relative did the research on my wife's father, whereas I’ve only pieced it together.

The research work on my own family has been carried out in pretty much the same manner. I have done most of the research myself on my mother's side, whereas the good assistance of Elisabeth Mohlin facilitated the research work on my ancestors from Gotland. The research on my father’s side of the family was possible with help from Gert Pålsson, who more or less knows all there is to know about Skåne.

If you find my genealogical information interesting and would like further information, don’t hesitate to get in touch with me.
