Western Australia - Augusta
|
Augusta is a little place on the lowest corner where the south coast and the west coast join. Two different oceans meet there and on a clear day you can see the sunrise from one ocean and set over another. There on the most Southern Westerly tip of Australia, where the Indian and Southern Oceans meet, stands Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse as a solitary sentinel. As one of the last lighthouses that was manually operated till 1982, it is worth a visit.
The 8km drive from Augusta to Cape Leeuwin offers a great beautiful windflowers, costal scenery and if the time of the year is right and you are lucky, you can also watch the whales as the migrate up along the coast and back down south again.
North of Augusta along the coastline is the so called Caves Road. Here you can enter many fantastic caves like Jewel Cave, Lake Cave and Mammoth Cave. There are daily guided tours, so take a full day to explore the underground of Western Australia here. Don't miss this out if you are in the area!
