A. Written Statement
Pdf-file [41 kB]: Written statement

I graduated with a MSc in Cognitive Science at Umeå University in 2003. During my studies I especially interested myself in and focused on the aspects of the subject related to Interaction Design, Design Theory and Human-Computer
Interaction.

Since finishing my studies I’ve been working as Webmaster at the travel agency Vulkan Resor for almost three years. Vulkan Resor specialize in travel to Iceland for individuals and meetings/incentive travel to Iceland and other selected destinations for groups and companies. My responsibilities at the company comprise the web and market communication. I work with web design, graphic design, marketing and the companies communication towards different target groups on the web and in print. In the last 12 months I’ve been focusing on two projects that involve the design, usability, information architecture and implementation of two new home pages. One of these targeted towards individual travellers with on-line booking (www.vulkanresor.se). The other one targeted towards group- and conference travel (www.vulkankonferens.se). This work has been performed together with an external supplier responsible for the technical platform.

The subject field of Interaction Design attracts me with it’s multifaceted nature and I am applying to the Master Program in Interaction Design to have the opportunity to further develop my skills and knowledge within the subject. As well as obtaining a more specialized work profile I aim to evolve my creative skills, and learn more methodological and practical design skills. I also intend to have the chance to catch up with theoretical knowledge within the field that my previous studies only briefly touched upon. The program at Malmö Högskola caught my attention due to the balanced combination of practical and theoretical elements and the emphasis on the overall picture of the design- and development process of artifacts.

I find the task of developing, shaping and influencing new artifacts that surrounds
and interacts with the modern life as truly inspiring. After finishing the education I see myself working with design and development of all types of commercial digital products and systems for entertainment, communication, daily life and work tasks. Of special interest to are the perspectives of social and tangible interaction - or embodied interaction to use a comprehensive term.

In the entertainment sector I see a great potential in developing products with embodied experiences such as those evoked by the modes of interaction of artifacts from the pre-digital age, for example Pinball games and Jukeboxes.
Another exciting field is mobile phones and tools and services for communication
based on wireless and mobile technology for use in commercial and public spaces.
Other areas that interest me is web based information services and e-commerce solutions as well as tools for managing, sharing and using information in collaborative
work contexts. For example in the travel and meeting industry as I have personal experience from.

B1. WORK SAMPLE #1 - CITY TAGS
Pdf-file [542 kB]: Work Sample #1
Pdf-file [37 kB]: Statement on Work Sample #1 and #2

The concept City Tags offers a social and collaborative approach for users to to experience a cities highlights and happenings through shared information.Accessed by a mobile phone the service is used as the user is moving through the city.

City Tags is used an example of the design of a “situated service”, where digital information on city space is avaliable in the same context and location as where it’s information and use is needed. City Tags is furthermore an attempt for a collaboratively constructed reference base of the city space with resemblance to web pages as wikipedia and del.icio.us.

B2. WORK SAMPLE #2 - The Appearance of Character in Interaction with Screen-Based Computer Artifacts
Pdf-file [457 kB]: Work Sample #2
Pdf-file [37 kB]: Statement on Work Sample #1 and #2

My masters thesis “The Appearance of Character in Interaction with Screen-Based Computer Artifacts” is my second work sample. This thesis takes the first steps to explore the notion of an ascription of a “Character on Things” that was put forward by Janlert and Stolterman (1997). In this framework, the character of an artifact is defined as an emergent unity of a number of characteristics that the artifact displays. Not precise and detailed, but rather aiming at a higher-level, overall description of the artifact.

The thesis is used as a work sample since it demonstrates my work with developing
an unexplored theoretical stand by inquiring knowledge from product semantics within industrial design, social psychology and interaction design. Further development of theory and methodology within this notion may benefit designing appearance of digital artifacts. The framework may hence be used to as tool to improve user expectations, facilitate usage, express qualities and a products/companys values as a means for branding.

These webpages are developed jointly by me, collegues at Vulkan Resor and Visit Technology Group that has developed the technical platform. Since all parts of my work concerning these websites are material of confidential nature possessed by Vulkan Resor and also a work in progess I am not able to supply this as a work sample.

The layout, disposition and information in the catalogue is entirely produced by me.
