Cervello - "Melos" (1973)

This is truly an awesome and absolutley GREAT album. Very hard to find these days. I think its only availible as japan import cd. Sounding very much like Osanna in places and thats not that strange since some members here were from Osanna. There is very much flute here, saxophone also of course.
"Canto del Capro" opens this masterpiece, some distoried sounds and a chantlike voice introduces us to the powerful and mysterious world of Cervello. This track is very typical for their sound. The sax, the calm but disturbing melodies, their lie some sinister atmosphere around the tracks here. The singer has a very plesant voice, ot too light, not too dark. This could be what Osannas "Palepoli" would have sounded like if it had been divided into 6-7 songs instead of 2 long ones (and a short one). The rhytm and feeling of the track can all of a sudden burst into a mad part where it sounds like early King Crimson. Actually there arent any keyboards on this album. Instead its the guitars, flutes, saxophones and some vibraphones that rule here.

"Trittico" has also this very beautiful melodies, backed up by flutes and guitars. It reminds me of both Celeste (for the symphonic melodies) and Osanna (for the disturbed and "violent" parts that pops up here and there).
Especially the flutes/guitars here sound very nice, and then around halfway into the track comes a furious and wild part, saxes and guitars going wild. Then it slows down again. The last minute or so is a wild freaks oout chant that sounds absolutley awesome. On of the best trakck here. The tracks here have many dephts, one never knows what to expect. "Euterpe" has the same mood, beginning pretty slow and with a mellow and a bit melancholic sound. The sound gets a bit heavier near the end, the sax sounds great as ever.

"Scinsione" has again a mystic and slightly evil mood. A creepy intro sounding like a horror-soundtrack almost opens this track. It very soon gets into a dark groove, heavy drums and bass b/w sax and wild singing. Overall the sounds that is being conjured here are fantastic. Again this is one of the best tracks here.
"Melos", another wonderful track that opens with some soft vibraphones to the singing and some heavenly flutes. Again I am reminded of the more mellow parts on "Palepoli". As usual, the track evolves and soon get heavier and heavier near the end, ending with a crescendo.

There is such a high class on these melodies and on the playing, overall its impossible to dislike the sound of Cervello, 'Melos' is a stunning masterpeice from beginning to end. One of the very best and most original albums from there.
