Kalla Jävla Samhälle - LP (2004) My last chapter I was promised a more mature and raw Project Hopeless, and that’s certainly the case here. The raw-as-hell production, fierce crust and raging vocals finally hits the spot. I’ve seen them develop over the years, and now they’re finally where I want them. I fucking love the high-pitch screaming now that it’s backed up by raw and deeper screams. The dual vox in Pain fear agony kicks some major arse. The grinding in Du är slut som människa och ingen vill dig ha really does a number on you. The bass drum kicking in the beginning of Lyftet really get’s me going. I could go on and on like this, telling you what I love about each song, but I won’t. I’ll just leave you with these words: Arse-kicking, punishing old school crust in your face, knocking you over and giving you a good ol’ stomp with the boots! PH Comment: What´s to say this is a fucking good response isn´t it. Slug and lettuce This is rad Swedish heavy punk and I like everything about this band, especially the dual male/female (or so it sounds) harsh vocals. But hte snare drum sound is so bad, so hollow and loud, it ends up making my head feel like it is going to split open and I want to stop the misery. This sucks cause if that snare drum was thrown from a cliff then I´d be raging on this band, which is what I want to be doing. I am the last person to get crazy critical on any kind of technical recording stuff. Usually when shit rocks, you can overlook it. But this snare drum thing is killing me. The rest of their sound has a ton of distortion and a thick quality, and the delivery is fast and adrenaline paced. This three piece band sings in Swedish but translates the themes which are socially conscious struggles. I want to hear this badn again after they kill the snare drum. - Chris PH Comment: Not to bad for being a totall miserable review for the snare drum, so far as we´ve come to date we´ve just been dual male vocalists, and backups by Sandra, which´s been the closest to female/male dueal vocals, but I think it´s cool that the vocals seems be in the condition it is. Profane Existence Fucking raw political crusty hardcore from Sweden. Musically, this reminds me of a lo-fi early SKITSYSTEM mixed with NO PARADE, but darker. Most of the lyrics are in Swedish, with explanatory paragraphs in English, covering such topics as homelessness, class and race issues, and government all from a very misanthropic point of wiev. Very punk. Good solid album, but I do think the vocals carry it a bit. With a lesser vocalist, I would probably get bored. (The bastard) PH Comment: Cool not to bad being a punk with a throat as a broken dream. More will come for sure. Attack! Fanzine There are many bands playing råpunk around the world, but there are few that are as RAW as Project Hopeless are. High speed, intensely screamed piercing vocals, backed up by some growling here and there, crisp guitars and manic drumming. Unfortunately I once again must comment on the production. It isn't the best and the guitars are lost behind the drums and vocals, creating the feeling that they play faster than they can handle. It gets messy at times, as the various elements aren't separated enough, but once you can get past that and hear it all you soon realize that this is solid raw punk. Some tracks are harder to get into because of the production, but tracks like "Ser du ljuset i tunneln?", "Lyftet" and "Totalkontroll - bevakning" are instant hits. And the band has definitely managed to create more variety on this debut full length than on previous 7" outputs. Now, let me hear a little more depth in future recordings and you will get me to shut up. The lyrics on this, and all other Project Hopeless records, are of the political kind. Most of them in Swedish, some in English - all with English comments/explanations and all angry. On this record Steve Hyland from the zine Attitude Problem, England, are also appearing for the first time doing spoken word, something that is meant to return on future recordings as he's a steady member from now on. [Krogh] PH Comment: More meesy hardcore will come I can assure you, no seriously the future will probably be a change you´ll apreciate a lot. More spoken words and political hardcore fury will be burning for you all. Short fast and loud Of all the millions of Swedish hardcore bands roaming around that country I think this band represents that country´s punk roots best. Their trick is not to overproduce and turn raw d-beat punk into polished d-beat heavy metal. This bands guitar tones would do CONFUSE proud. Criminally under-rated, this batch of Swede punks churn out violent, brutal thrashy HC stuff, kinda like MOB 47 used to do. No great guitarr och drumming gymnastics, just a constantrain of bullets. Not all these songs are classics, but the overall onslaught of rage in undeniable. I think the vocals are what carries this band. They are just abnormally pissed off, high-pitched volleys of spite. Try to find this band´s previous EP´s while you´re searching the distro lists. PH Comment: The response couldn´t be better, thanx for your words. Folkzine Here on their first LP, Project Hopeless rips up a complete set of 14 tracks, of totally furious raw punk with some blasting d-beat. They are pissed off, more than ever, and are here to blow your brains out, with their fierce high-pitched/growling dual vocals, shredding guitars and blasting bass and drums. Altogether they blend in the most important music ingredients from different styles and end up with this old school havoc cocktail. Sadly the production isn’t the best, it doesn’t give Project Hopeless the right sound that they actually have. The sound gets blurry in several parts, where different instruments “fade away”. And that snare-drum could have been tuned in another way; it just messes with the rest of the musical experience. With loads of bands who sound the same, Project Hopeless stands out with uniqueness where others have failed. Let’s just hope that on their coming records; the sound gets treated much better than on this one. PH Comment: (None) |
