"Question with boldness even the existence of God; because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason than that of blindfolded fear." - Thomas Jefferson

I am an atheist (is that at all possible?), which means that I do not believe in the existence of any gods or other supernatural beings. I was a Christian for over a decade, but I gradually began to realize, through calm, rational reasoning, that there was, in fact, no reason whatever for supposing Christianity true. I invite you to find out for yourself why this is so.

I also urge you to leave the Church of Sweden, if you are a member. For information on this and a form to fill out, click here

Introduction
Important Essays on the Non-Existence of God
  • Does the Free-Will Defense Constitute a Sound Theodicy? by Dr. Niclas Berggren. In this essay, I take on the free-will defense, which states that the theodicy problem is undermined by evil stemming from humans with a free will. I show why this "defense" is erroneous and why, as a result, the existence of evil informs us that God does not exist.
  • The Errancy of Fundamentalism Disproves the God of the Bible by Dr. Niclas Berggren. An essay which shows that the Christian god does not exist, since if he did, he would not have produced a revelation like the Bible, which contains errors and ambiguities.
  • The Evidential Argument from Evil, a most profficient and illuminating exposition of the weaknesses of most theist defense attempts against the argument from evil. Delightfully argued.
  • The Problem of Natural Evil by Brian Marston, who demonstrates that God and natural evil are incompatible. Since the latter exists, the former cannot.
  • The Argument from the Bible, by Professor Ted Drange, on why the Bible undermines a belief in the Christian god.
  • The Arguments from Evil and Nonbelief, an advanced essay by atheist philosopher Ted Drange in support of the non-existence of God.
  • The Fine-Tuning Argument, where Ted Drange analyzes the argument that God is the best explanation for the combination of physical constants which allow life.
Morality and Ethics: Are They Possible without a God?
  • Science and Ethics by Bertrand Russell. In this insightful essay, the grand philosopher, mathematician, and writer analyzes the nature of ethics and morality and presents a strong case for the subjectivity of values.
  • Are God and Ethics Inseparable or Incompatible? by philosopher Robin Le Poidevin at the University of Leeds. The problems with basing morality on the idea of a god are examined and contrasted with the plausible alternative: subjective ethics.
  • The Biological Basis of Morality by Professor Edward O. Wilson of Harvard, on what the natural sciences have to say about ethics.
  • On Nature by John Stuart Mill, in which he clarifies that what is natural is not necessarily moral.
  • On the Nature of Morality by Dr. Niclas Berggren. This is an Internet reply to an essay by Eugene Khutoryansky which claims that there is an objective morality. I argue the opposite point.
  • My Personal Moral View by Dr. Niclas Berggren.
  • Is There a Proper Role for Ethics? by Dr. Niclas Berggren. Since people do not have free will, moral language is incorrect but perhaps useful, for pragmatic reasons.
  • Ethics for Logical Positivists, a concise discussion by A. J. Ayer which demonstrates that arguments about the moral character of actions are really arguments about facts, not values (since values merely reflect the feelings of individuals).
  • Taking the Ten Commandments In Vain: A Critique of the Decalogue as a Code of Ethics by Fredrik Bendz and Niclas Berggren, in which it is argued that the ten commandments are not particularly impressive as an ethical statement.
  • Against the Moral Argument, a refutation of two arguments for the existence of God stemming from considerations of (the nature of) morality, by Mark I. Vuletic.
  • The Moral Foundations of Atheism and Christianity, a brief but to-the-point essay by Mark I. Vuletic, which argues that the claim that atheism entails immorality is absurd and that, in fact, the morality of atheists is superior to that of Christians, to the extent that the morality of the latter depends on absolute divine commandments.
  • The Human Basis of Laws and Ethics, an essay in which Frederick Edwords explains how it is possible to be moral without a god.
  • Desire, a sound clip (Real Audio) of Bertrand Russell, discussing the basis of successful morality.

The Case for Evolution
Note: The theory of evolution does not necessarily entail atheism, but I include this section because many religious individuals argue for their belief by using the argument from design. I think the theory of evolution makes this argument redundant.
  • The World of Richard Dawkins, perhaps the strongest and most able defender of Darwinism.
  • Talk Origins demonstrates, with scientific rigor, that evolution is indeed a real biological process.
  • Behe's Empty Box, a selection of critiques of Michael Behe's book Darwin's Black Box: The Biochemical Challenge to Evolution, which does not, as some think, provide a good argument against the theory of evolution.
  • Reviews of Behe's book, more devastating critiques of Darwin's Black Box.
  • Are the Odds Against the Origin of Life Too Great to Accept? - an analysis of the argument that life could not have arisen without a Creator, by Richard Carrier.
  • Frequently Encountered Criticisms in Evolution vs. Creationism, an accessible list of common creationist arguments against evolution and proper replies; by Mark I. Vuletic.
  • Naturalistic Fallacy, a review by Professor Michael Ruse of the charge of Phillip Johnson that evolution entails naturalism entails atheism entails immorality.
  • Evolution vs. Creationism Home Page, another high-quality selection of readings on the controversial topic.
  • Evolution and Ethics, on the research of Chris MacDonald at the University of British Columbia. Among other things, there are links to relevant essays which explain how evolutionary theory can explain the existence and nature of ethics.
  • Does the Universe Have a Cause?, a question I submitted to the Talk.Origins feedback section, along with the reply I received.
  • Jehovah's Witnesses and Evolution deals with the distorted argumentation on the issue of evolution by the Jehovah's Witnesses, especially in their book Life: How did it get here? By evolution or by creation?. A similar analysis is presented in Some Comments on the Book "Life - How did it Get Here? By Evolution or Creation?"
  • The Origin of Species, the famous book by Charles Darwin. Beware: this is a big file.
  • The Lady Hope Story A critical discussion of the loose claim that Charles Darwin renounced his theory of evolution and became a Christian on his death bed.
