Martin Guerre is Alain Boublil's and Claude-Michel Schönberg's latest musical. The show takes place in the small Catholic village Artigat in the Protestant France in the 16th century. The leading character Martin Guerre is a man who has to marry the beautiful Bertrande de Rols even though he doesn't love her.

When the couple never gets a child, Martin Guerre's uncle Pierre Guerre becomes angry with him and to be free from all the complaining people in the village Martin decides to join the army. In the army he meets Arnaud de Thil and they become close friends.

Years later in a battle Martin gets shot and dies. Arnaud decides then to go to the village Artigat to tell Bertrande what has happened.

When he comes to village everybody believes that it is Martin Guerre who has finally returned from the war, everyone except for Bertrande. She knows that this is an impostor but in spite of that they fall in love with each other. Soon after Bertrande gets pregnant but now the people in Artigat have begun to hesitate, the man isn't like Martin was.

A big trial starts but Arnaud still claims that he is Martin Guerre. During the trial a man enters the room - it is the real Martin Guerre. Arnaud de Thil is thrown into prison but Martin notice that this is the man Bertrande loves and he helps them to escape.

A big search for them starts and ends with Arnaud gets killed and everyone in the village finds out that they can love each other even if some are protestants and some are catholics. Bertrande decides to go away and leave the real Martin Guerre and Artigat to start a new life with her child.
