Short version in English

Hello!

We who are sailing the Mirror in Sweden believe that it is a fun dinghy in which you can develop your sailing skills. The Mirror could be the natural step after the optimist and it is a complete dinghy with mainsail, jib and spinnaker.

Most of those who are sailing the Mirror in Sweden meet regularly to practise, compete and see each other. Those who do not show up so often keep themselves updated through the homepage and through our magazine.

Every year some of us go abroad to compete in the European or World Championships. For the upcoming World Championship in Östersund 2005 we look forward to see new sailors and members.

Membership

As a member of the IMCA-Sweden you receive a copy of our magazine twice a year containing information on upcoming regattas and other events. The magazine is an excellent opportunity for those who are not attending to our events to keep themselves updated. Membership is required if you want to have a valid measurement certificate i.e. be allowed to compete in the official regattas. Both Nationals and Nationals for teams are held every year, some regattas are held at the same time and the same place every year while other regattas are organized differently over the years.

Among the members you can find active sailors and their families along with old members who do not take part in the regattas anymore but still want to keep in touch perhaps waiting for new generations of sailors.

The history of the Mirror

The Mirror dinghy was born in 1963 in England after a contest in the Daily Mirror. A new dinghy for beginners, yet able enough to compete and develop in, still it had to be cheap and you should be able to build it yourself.

The winners of the contest were Jack Holt and Bucknell, who presented the blueprints of what would become the Mirror dinghy.

Today you can buy the dinghy as a plywood kit that you complete yourself, or as complete boats in plywood or GRP.

The Mirror is for a crew of two with mainsail, jib and spinnaker. It is readily transportable on trailer or on the roof of a car.

In 1989 it became an official ISAF class.

Most mirrors are built and sailed in Britain, Ireland and Australia. Other countries where Mirrors are sailed are Sweden, Netherlands, South Africa and Canada.
