Wake up everybody, rebellion is here!!! Every now and then there comes an album that changes and redefines the standards within a certain genre, "Wages Of Sin" did just that and also proved that women could prove themselves within the vocal aspects of extreme music. Angela Gossow has won the respect of so many people in the metal community (although there are those who do despise her, envious bastards!) thanks to her uncompromising high-pitched screams and fierce growls, no wonder the band shines with so much confidence today. The next step is "Anthems Of Rebellion", the latest album from this internationally acclaimed outfit and once again the band has chosen to go one step forward by increasing the keyboard use, adding some clean vocals (from Christopher) and letting modern clean electronics do some of the work, which makes the album varied, melodic and intense, I call it modern death/trash. The album didn’t get to me right away, I was just so blown away by "Wages Of Sin", it’s like this album doesn’t have that "impulsive" quality to it, this is great stuff but overall it’s a bit more midpaced, and no matter how hard they try, they’ll never top the magical moments of "Enemy Within" or say "Ravenous". Thirteen songs on an A.E. release may seem a bit unorthodox, but thankfully there’s loads of fun in every song, apart from the instrumentals, which aren’t real songs anyway. Some of my favourite tracks are: the very cool, melodic and aggressive couplet "We Will Rise" and "Dead Eyes See No Future", "Leader Of The Rats", "Exist To Exit" (modern "Dead Skin Mask") and the fantastic, semi operatic "Saints And Sinners". The songs are filled with professional, often ripping instrumentation; Daniel, Sharlee and the Amott brothers have upgraded their playing skills once more; faster tracks like "Silent Wars" and "Despicable Heroes", (a lost track from the "Black Earth" album?) shows us just how talented and tight these guys are, those trademark solos are everywhere! Angela’s performance is more controlled this time, I think she’s more comfortable and more involved, not only does she scream her lyrics out in the most convincing fashion but also let’s out some hellish growls when most appropriate. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that "Anthems Of Rebellion" is among the best albums this year, with songwriting, instrumentation and sound quality peaking at the highest, Arch Enemy can proudly sit back, enjoy their success and bask in their metal glory.
