Sarek's national park. The red line describes the approximate route we took, and the green and red dots show the starting and finish points respectively. The numbers indicates the night camps (the blue dots at the red line).
| (Day 0) | Departure from Göteborg to Gällivare, via Boden, by train. |
| Day 1: |
From Gällivare with bus to Vietas, a boat over the lake Langas. We made camp on the other side and spent the afternoon relaxing together with the 10 million mosquitoes present... |
| Day 2: | We made an early start, following a path for the first five kilometres. The path ended at a stream, ten meters wide, thigh deep, and with a very strong current. We had to cross this stream in order to continue our hike. So, time find a "third leg." Johan already had a walking staff for support, but Torbjörn and I did not, so we had to find some - which we also did. We crossed the stream without incidents. It was bloody cold, and the current was bad, so it would have been impossible to cross without support from a staff. As for the cold water, it was not too bad, but the burning sensation afterwards was... We had lunch with great view over the peak Slugga (1279 m) and set camp in close to the stream Sluggajåkkå. |
| Day 3: | Again, we had an early start, and after only walking a kilometre or two, we stumbled on a young Golden Eagle eating the carcass of a reindeer. I would appreciate that we were only about 15 meters from the eagle - a young male, but still impressively big. When the eagle saw us, it took off. We saw it several times after that, flying high, near the mountain Slugga... This night we set camp close to the stream Lulep Njentojåkkåtj. |
| Day 4: | We crossed the stream (actually a small river) Kukkesvakkjåkkå by a bridge... ...walked over the mountain peak Voinesvaratj (1006 m)... ...set camp next to the lake Voinesloubbalah. ...trying to find a spot where to cross the stream, but deemed to far to deep (maybe waist-deep) and to current to cross without support from a staff, of which Torbjörn and I had none. We had to abandon our original plans, trying to find an alternate route... |
| Day 5: | ...a half-day's trip upstream, we found to our big disappointment a place where we safely could have crossed the stream by wading. Since we only had packed for a day's trip, we did not have the time to go back, pack the tent and come back, continue along our original route... Same camp as the night before. |
| Day 6: | Packing our stuff, heading back, almost the same way as we had arrived, but this time we dared cross the stream Kukkesvakkjåkkå further downstream, not using to bridge... Setting camp close to small unnamed stream... |
| Day 7: | An early start, or at least to our measure; as we are packing our tent, two other backpackers came walking and stoped to have a chat. They had been walking for some three hours already! About lunchtime, we meet another group of backpackers. Rush hour or what? What is everyone doing here now? Who cares, we were going home! Again we had to ford the stream - luckily Torbjörn's and my staff, that we used the first day, were where we left them. We set camp on the same place as for the first night. We Arranged for a boat to come and pick us up the following morning. We walked to the lake Kårtjejaure (415 m) and had a look at the waterfall between the lakes; the lake Langas (375 m). |
| Day 8: |
We were pick-up by the boat right on time, and we set camp for the last time on the other side on a parking lot, believe or not! Not many cars though, in fact none! We made a day's trip along the road next to Kårtjejaure to the northwest. We had a most wonderful dinner at a restaurant in Vietas that night, and a date with about 10 million mosquitoes! |
| (Day 9) |
The bus departed Vietas to Gällivare. At Gällivare railway station we ate lunch at - to us - the world famous Hamburger Kiosk. Then we said good-bye to Gällivare for this time, and the train set of to Göteborg via Boden. |
| (Day 10) | Home sweet home! Back in Göteborg. |
