| (Day 0 - August 6) |
Departure from Göteborg by train to Gällivare via Boden. |
| Day 1 - August 7: |
Bus from Gällivare to Kebnats, and then by boat over the lake Langas (375 m) to Saltoluokta Fjällstation (Mountain Hotel). Distance: 9 km We started walking along the King's Trail (Kungsleden) southwards, but soon the trail branched, and without looking at the map, we picked the wrong branch! After a couple of hours we realised our mistake - we were about 2 hours west of the King's Trail! To get back to the trail, without loosing too much time and heading, we had to ford a stream, Autsutj-jåkkå - twice! We camped along the King's Trail. (Campsite the first night.) |
| Day 2 - August 8: |
Distance: 18 km We held good pace along the trail and reached the lake Sitojaure (630 m) without incident, where a Laplander took us over the lake with his boat. When we reached the southern shore, we continued walking along the King's Trail, but left the trail as soon as we reached the mountain range Njunjes. The ascend (about 320 m) to Njunjes, to get above the tree level, were quite exhausting - the last 150 meters were very steep. In fact, we consumed most of our water when we reached "the top" - bad mistake! We had heard that it had rained pretty much during the summer and expected to find water with ease. That was not so - rather the opposite actually. Therefore, the goal now was to find a stream and set camp for the day, but finding water took a while. We to walk an additional 3 km before we finally we found the stream, Abmojåkkå and could raise our tent next to it. (Campsite the second night.) |
| Day 3 - August 9: |
Distance: 8 km We continued across the plains of Njunjes and crossing the "border" to Sarek's National Park. The clouds were very low all day and the rain was never far off! There was not much rain while walking, just a light drizzle... During the day, we crossed two streams, but this time without wading. Instead, it was a balancing act, walking/jumping on stones in the stream - very exhausting indeed! Well, the rain came all right, just as we had raised the tent it started to rain very hard. We got the tent up just in time. Not getting to wet. Our campsite was on the shore of lake Abmojaure (1019 m). (Campsite the third night.) |
| Day 4 - August 10: |
Distance: 0 km - Day's trip: 2 km This day we had planned a day's trip to Niettervagge - a valley about 6 km away. Leaving our tent and backpacks, only bringing a thermos with hot water, to make rose-hip cream, and some bread. The clouds were very low and rain was in the air - it had rained most of the night... Well, our day's trip ended quite abruptly as Johan slipped on a rock and fell face down, chipping his two front teeth, and got deep cut in his lower lip. He was bleeding quite badly! Some luck though; there was a snowfield only 15 meters away so we got some snow/ice for Johan to use on his bleeding lip. After almost an hour we headed back to our base camp... Later that day we washed ourselves in lake Abmojaure. Cold but refreshing - not to bad though. The moral was quite low that evening and we talked about aborting the trip and head back to civilisation. We decided to postpone our decision until the next morning. (Campsite the fourth night.) |
| Day 5 - August 11: |
Distance: 6 km - plus Day's trip: 4 km Johan's lip was not too badly injured, therefore we decided to walk towards Rapadalen (the Rapa-valley) and the weather improved from cloudy to mostly sunny! Moral was improving again. We had to cross the streams we crossed on Day 3, but this time I decided to ford the stream rather than balancing on the stones in the stream (for a very good reason), but Johan dared to try the slippery stones!. Well, the line between bravery and foolishness very thin; or some people never learn do they? No accidents this time though... We found a good spot to raise our tent next to a stream, on west side of the peaks Passåive (1216 m) and Skierfe (1079 m), close to the Rapa-valley. We got a very nice view! Since the weather was good, we walked to the edge of the Rapa-valley where Johan and I got a good view over the valley. What can I say?!? Breathtaking! After admiring the view for a while we decided to climb the peak Skierfe (1179 m) to get an even better view over the valley. We did not go all the way to the top, but still... The south face of Skierfe drops vertically for at least 300 meters down to the Rapa-valley. (Campsite the fifth night.) |
| Day 6 - August 12: |
Distance: 0 km - Day's trip: 5 km A beautiful day. We brought water and some snacks for this day's trip towards the ridge Ritok (978 m). We never got very close, because the gradient down to the Rapa-valley quickly became very steep! The gradient made it impossible to walk, so we stopped at a crevice where we just sat down and enjoyed the view, the sun and the snacks. Back at our tent; time to take a bath and do some laundry in the stream. For the rest of the day we just relaxed. We had a guest for dinner - a reindeer decided to eat about 5 meters from the tent! (Campsite the sixth morning.) |
| Day 7 - August 13: |
Distance: 12 km On our way back to the civilisation, we had a short stop at the peak Måskoktjåkkå (1106 m) with a final view over the Rapa-valley. From the peak Tåresaive (1083 m), we got a wonderful view north and south of the mountain range Njunjes. After another hour, we got back on the King's Trail and continued north. We camped at the south shore of lake Sitojaure (630 m -at Svine). Time to us the mosquito repellent, which worked quite well, with the combination of few mosquitoes... |
| Day 8 - August 14: |
Distance: 20 km We had an early start this day; another Laplander took us over the lake Sitojaure with his boat and we continued on the King's Trail north towards Saltoluokta. We held a very good pace and had lunch at Day 1's campsite, and arrived at Saltoluokta Fjällstation (Mountain Hotel - 377 m) without incidents. To raise a tent near the Mountain Hotel did cost money! So we figured that if we are going to spend money to sleep, than we might as well take a room at the mountain hotel, which we did. We had a nice, well-needed hot shower and sauna that afternoon! |
| Day 9 - August 15: |
Distance: 0 km - Day's trip: 12 km Another day's trip - only bringing water and snacks. This time it was a 6 km walk to the summit of Lulep Kierkau (1139 m) and with an elevation of 762 m! We made it slightly less than 2 hours - very exhausting! Again rewarding; a magnificent view meet us at the summit, despite the low clouds. We got a nice view over some "old friends" - the mountain Slugga and the river Autsutj-jåkkå that we forded on our first day. |
| (Day 10 - August 16) |
With everything packed, we departed from Saltoluokta by boat to Kebnats. From Kebnats, by bus to Gällivare and then by train to Göteborg via Boden. Of course, in Gällivare we had our, by now traditional hamburger, fries and coke at the Hamburger Kiosk at the railway station... |
| (Day 11 - August 17) | Back home in Göteborg. |
