Pseudotropheus demasoni
KONINGS, 1997

Pseudotropheus demasoni
Pseudotropheus demasoni female
Pseudotropheus demasoni male
Pseudotropheus demasoni was first found at Pombo Rocks, Tanzania in 1993. This populatiun was extremely small and only a small number of fishes was exported in 1995.

Later a new population was found at Ndumbi Reef, this population was larger but still small. Recently a third population have been found, at this location the fishes are larger and if possible even more brightly colored than the fishes from Pombo and Ndumbi.

In the lake
It occupates the upper region in the rocky habitat that it prefers, this fish have never been observed in scoals instead it seems to live alone in its feeding territory that is a large stone or a rock. In the lake agressive behavior have never been observed. It feeds from the biocover in the same way as species from the genera Labidochromis. Sexually active fishes or brooding females have never been observed in the lake (When the fisherman catch Ps demasoni they get about twice as many males as females, this would suggest that the females stay hidden among the rocks while they brood).

In aquarium
With its small size (up to 7-8 cm) and bright colors many aquarist have fallen for this fish, but remember,
this fish is no beginners fish, this is a very agressive fish, adult males will kill each other if they are not kept in large numbers. They need an aquarium of at least 300 liters. The decoration should be spartan, this will make it impossible for any male to keep a territory and agression will decrease. My fishes are very productie and I always have a few females brooding.
This is one of the most beautiful malawi cichlids, but remember to keep them in large numbers.
