Hello and welcome to my Opel Manta page. This site is made as an celebration to the Manta. I own a Manta A from 1971 and personally I think it’s the most beautiful of Opel’s models. The Manta has a sporty look and a round body which makes it very beutiful to watch. The construction is made so that it is easy and fun to drive.

Historical review

The Manta was introduced by Opel in September 1970. It was called Manta A and it came with a number of different motor alternatives: 1.2, 1.6S, 1.9S, 1.9Ralley (later called 1.9SR), 1.9Berlinetta (a more luxurious model) and 1.9Turbo. The Ralley model had a bit greater power and a nicer interior.

In 1975, Opel introduced the Manta B-model. It was a development of the Manta A. The motor alternatives was the same but the body modificated a bit.

In 1982, it was time for some new models. A few new motor alternatives appeared and the Manta came with in GT version (1.8), 1.8S, GTE (2.0) and 400 (2.4 16V). The body was modificated further and it now had a 5-gear transmission.

Opel Manta A -71

The picture presents my car, a ’71 Manta. It’s totally renovated in 1996. Before it came in my possessions it had been standing in a barn for some years. It had corroded quite badly but after many hours of welding and puttying it got its old shape back and fresh plates all around. The painjob was mad with a cheep universal paint, the colour called "signal yellow". I picked the cheep paint to afford repainting the car when the corrosion comes back. The result wasn’t bad at all. Despite the cheep paint and the job to be done by an amateur in the garage the finish got real good. The interior was badly worn so I replaced it with a fresher one taken from a Manta SR. I also took the extra instruments, mounted only in the SR, from the same car.

The engine mounted in the car was the original 1.6 engine. Despite the weber carburettor, it didn’t give the car enough power. My brother had a 2.0 Opel engine laying around which I took care of and replaced the 1.6 with it. From the start, it had a weber carburettor but now I've replaced it with an injection package in order to get more power and less fuel consummation. The light weight of the car, only 1020 kg, makes the car quite fast.

A Panasonic CD radio and a power amplifier with 4x200W(4x50W RMS) is mounted in the car. The amplifier supplies a pair of 10" subwoofers plus a pair of 6"x9" speakers all placed in the back of the car. It’s a simple and cheep system which gives a good sound all through the register.
