TARGET AREA AND TARGET
MISSION DESCRIPTION
1/1
September 26, 1942
Lille, AF

There were no fighters until we reached the target. A lone 190 tried to approach us from a vertical dive. Engineer Bradshaw hit and damaged it. The pilot fired but his aim was off. He dove away and disappeared with a smoking engine.

Light inaccurate flak over the target, but we got hit in the left wing outboard tank. It self-sealed and we didn’t loose too much fuel.

Bombardier Dumont was on target and estimates approximately 30 per cent on target.

Flak hit again. Flight deck and waist took some damage. The radio was destroyed, and a large hole was made next to the toilet.

Another wave of 109s approached, but was driven off by the formation. We didn’t see any more fighters.

The route back to base was uneventful.

Cherbourg, AF

The first fighters attacked as we neared the target. Two 109s came in in the first wave but both were driven off the Spitfires. Not long there after two 110s attacked. One was driven off. The remaining bandit attacked from 6 level. Tunnel gunner and tail gunner missed, but the 110 hit us in the tail. The Spitfires couldn’t get to this fighter so he came around again from 12 level. This time SGT Travis Bradshaw seriously damaged it.

Flak hit the tail and destroyed the left rudder. Fortunately I had time to stabilize the plane before bomb release and 2LT Lawrence Dumont was on target. Flak hit again as we left Cherbourg behind us. The right aileron was destroyed. When flak ceased, three waves attacked. The first was driven off by the 4th fighter group. Three 109s were driven off in the second wave. One got through and attacked from 12 high. He missed and disappeared. The third wave was driven off by the squadron. Good team work!

The mission was not over yet. We were now over the Channel when three 110s attacked. The Spits drove off one at 6. The remaining two attacked from 10.30 level and 12 low. Both missed.

The rest of the mission was uneventful.

Signed,

     Marcus Kingsbury
