Already in 1994 after just having completed a WCS project for Mwanza Bugando Hill Hospital we talked about our next. We had decided on Zanzibar where there are three optician working. But bad luck struck and Helena was badly injured in an assault and robbery on the beach of Stone Town, Zanzibar in March 1994.

It would be 6 years before we were back.

House of Wonder meets the traveler to Zanzibar.

The old Stone Town is being restored by money from UNESCO. It is a World Heritage.

The fragrance of cloves encompass the islands of Unguja and Pemba. The mysterious tales of witch doctors and slavery can almost be physically felt as you walk the narrow streets.

Our hosts in Zanzibar for the second year are Ashura and Khalfan Khalfan Without their fantastic hospitality and encouraging help our work on Zanzibar would have been much harder. We will for ever be grateful to them and value their friendship. Their house in the middle of Stone Town is a home away from home for us in the little flat across their courtyard.

Asanteni sana, Bibi Ashura na Bwana Khalfan.
