Firth, Colin Firth Career Timeline. Online since 1997. Updated Saturday, June 16, 2001

Haven't seen many Firth films yet? Don't know which ones to buy, rent or borrow?

Here are some personal ratings by me and my friends - Françoise, Jan, Jane, Jennie, Lisa, Liz, Martine, Mary, Mid, Peg and Sherri. As firthfans I guess we are somewhat biased in our judgements, and really should [?] have given all productions top ratings, simply because Colin is featured.... But then, what's the point of rating? Instead we've valued the productions as

  • Excellent
  • Good
  • Fair

Our comments are presented in two categories: the production as a whole, and Colin's part in it.

Note: each production in the list below is linked to a page with further information and pictures from the production. Use your browsers back button to return to this page.

Excellent Over all quality Colin's role
Pride & Prejudice [TV series] Supreme. Holds up to multiple screenings. Always something new to admire. Supreme acting and appeal. He doesn't miss a turn in delivering one of the most romantic figures in English literature, with every twist of Jane Austen's wit intact.
Bridget Jones's Diary Great fun! A dreamy 20th century Mr. Darcy - and we get to see more of Darcy being warm and human after the "thaw".
A Month in the Country Excellent. Charming and poignant. Has such an inarticulate character ever been conveyed with such eloquence and emotional resonance?
Valmont A favourite with some. For others, the story doesn't quite work. Yummy. Colin's Valmont goes from carefree flirt to worn-out manipulator without quite answering the question - did he love anybody?
Shakespeare in Love Great movie, great ensemble Unusual and witty, with a fabulous soundtrack. Oscar awarded. Excellent, but not enough screen time. One of Colin's least interesting roles.
Another Country Captivating Colin's Tommy Judd is terrific. This could be sensational eye candy (young Colin) if it weren't so much more - a moving depiction of the idealistic conviction, determination and suffering of youth. Excellent.
Conspiracy [TV film] Excellent. Excellent.
The English Patient Oscar awarded. To some this is their favourite movie of all time. Excellent but not enough.
Colin is totally wasted in this one... The director trashed his character to build up the lead.
The One Before The Last [BBC radio play] Could listen to this forever. To hear Colin recite Brooke's famous poem If I should die... Brilliant! Just listen to that luscious voice slipping and sliding around, flirting, joking, being tormented, childish, tempting, caressing etc. Hear Colin kiss the back of his own hand and trying to sound passionate!
Three Days of Rain Uneven. Impressive! Colin's Walker/Ned stands out.
Good Over all quality Colin's role
Tumbledown [TV film] War film too real... Excellent work. Simply the most electric, powerful performance Colin has ever given. So far.... He rises to every challenge this film has to offer.
Fever Pitch Enjoyable. Nice comedy. Very funny, very distinct character. Believable, lovable yob. Lot's of lovely Colin moments (he's very good with comedy). Great to see Colin in a slightly off beat role.
Apartment Zero Cultish but good. One of his best tortured types. A brilliant performance that richly rewards viewing repression on the verge of breaking down into madness.
The Hour of the Pig
aka The Advocate
A wonderfully quirky film. Very funny film, excellent supporting cast. Very funny, very distinct character. Beautifully acted. Sex appeal.
Master of the Moor [TV series] Good BBC fare. Terrific tortured type. So effective. Colin's Stephen Whalby is achingly confused and vulnerable. There are incredible scenes here, like the interrogation scene, to mention just one.
Hostages [TV film] Docu-drama. Painful viewing and very intense film as long as it stays with the hostages. It loses something when it switches to the relatives. Convincing
Donovan Quick [TV film] Not hard to watch. Idealism or madness? A really excellent performance in a sort of minor film.
Lost Empires [TV series] Very long. A bit unfocused, this one never seems to go very deeply into its characters. Honest and appealing depiction
My Life So Far Heartwarming. Deligtful. Worth the prize of admission for Colin's final scene in the U.S. version
Wings of Fame A little too arty, a little too glossy on the surface, but still interesting to watch. Cultish. Great looking: "different" character
Dutch Girls [TV film] A very sweet, very silly, very appealing little film about adolescents and first love. Don't dare miss it! So young, so sweet, so real.
A must see, if only to watch Colin's Neal Truelove - so appealing.
Out of the Blue [TV film] Oddball satire. Low budget, but lively and nicely acted. Different.
Love Colin's willingness to be a self-centered bastard.
Circle of Friends Enjoyable. A slight, appealing film, but don't go there if you are looking for good Colin viewing. Little screen time. You don't get much of him and that in a very unappealing character. The film doesn't show off Colin's character all that well, other than his willingness to look silly and not try to be heroic and likeable.
Relative Values Harmless. Not a great film. Old fashioned, old chestnut. Colin has lots of fun with his role and that's enjoyable to watch.
Nineteen Nineteen [TV film] Cultish. Interesting film, but not enough Colin. Haunted young soul
Blackadder Back and Forth [millennium feature /TV film] Not as good as others Enjoyable
Fair Over all quality Colin's role
Nostromo [TV series] Too big a story to be told as sharply focused as it needs to be. Rather heavy and long. Some excellent scenes. Not enough Colin.
Deep Blue Sea [filmed London play] This one feels too much like a play - claustrophobic. Unappealing but on the mark. Colin looks too young to be this jaded. Another example of Colin's willingness to play un-heroic and unlikeable characters.
Camille Great cast, hopeless film. An embarrassingly bad movie for all concerned. Colin has his moments.
The Widowing of Mrs. Holroyd [TV play] Uneven. Excellent cast. Unrecognizable. His best scene is as a corpse!
Secret Laughter of Women Colourful but hardly prizewinning. Eye candy. Slight on story but Colin looks wonderful!
Tries too hard to be enigmatic and interesting.
Femme Fatale Silly film. Forget the story. Check your common sense at the door and watch Joe Prince (Colin) - a real prince of a guy. Can't help loving him.
A must see, if only to see Joe Prince - so sweet, so appealing.
A Thousand Acres A good book made so-so. Ruined a good book and the opportunity to make Colin shine as Jess. Not his fault, though. Eye candy. Colin is very good in a very small part that is underused.
Tales from the Hollywood Hills [TV series] Oddball Hollywood. Dapper smart alec. A short piece so the character is not very developed. Colin is just fine, there's just not much to it.
The Turn of the Screw [TV film] A so-so remake Not quite on the mark. He's there to sell viewers on the program.
The Secret Garden Childrens's story. There are better adaptions. So sweet, little required. One scene does not much of a performance make. Save your money for the better ones.
Comeback [audio book] Long-winded story. Excellent storytelling. Try to keep track of Colin's characters: he lures you in with a different voice so you are compelled to listen to the story rather than him.
Dreamtime [symphony with some poetry read by Colin] Horrible production! Brilliant oratory [few minutes]
The Playmaker A very smarmy film. Some think it's worth a quick peek. Has voyeurism potential... Colin looks gorgeous, but seem ill at ease. This may actually be the worst performance Colin has ever given.
