VOLUME 3

Shine(USA) title:Powertime A heavyrock trio out of Washington DC formed by the legendary frontman Wino(pre-Obsessed/Vitus) along with 2 exmembers from the band Wretched in late 1996, this demo got released in march 1997.The magic on this tape is of course Wino´s magnificent vocals the good thing is that his voice is just getting better the older he gets, all the three songs is brilliant especially the track Lost sundance where Wino and co. creates a incredible sound with Winos incredible vocaldelivery he really sets the record straight. Shine has so far succeded to play support for Deep Purple and some other bands, after this incredible demo I hope that Shine gets a recorddeal, Welcome back WINO!!!!!

Memory Garden(Sweden) title:Demo Released in 1993, some of you knows what happened with Memory garden after this demo the band received a lot of success with the releases of the 7Ó the ep Forever and the Tides album the band has gone from strength to strength, but it all started with this demo. Memory garden was formed in 1992, I received the tape just after the release in 93 and I was knocked it was so close to Candlemass, not a ripoff totally but the melodies and the songstructure was created with a Candlemassfeel. It is 6 tracks on the tape and the songs are classics and Memory garden includes them from time to time in their liveshow. Actually it took some time to receive the first breakthrough but after a bunch of reviews in zines the ball was rolling and within some time this demo was sold out, and I guess the band didnt do any more copys. with the following releases the band has developed a even heavier direction still the Candlemassfeel is in there, the bands singer Stefan Berglund is the mainman cause his meodic powerful voice helps the music Memory garden plays to be even more forceful.

Morgana Lefay(swe.) title:rumours of rain One of the biggest heavy metalbands in sweden today after all their albums and a lot of touring around europe, Morgana lefay actually started in the late 80s and the first release was their self financed Lp Symphony of the damned that came out 1990 the album is nowdays regarded as a classic, with strong influences from savatage(Jon Olivaperiod) and Metalchurch the album was a good start for a debut. After changing some bandmembers the band went into the studio to record Rumours..in 92 a 10track demotape which is a classic in Swedish heavy metal history I would say, it is 9 originals and 1 cover of Nazareths razamanaz. Most of the songs ended up on their real debut album Knowing just as I. the demotape attracted attention on the german label Black mark who sent the band into the studio to record Knowing.. a.s.a.p, and the rest you probably know the band got more fans and Black mark had found success, the band changed in the lineup in 94 a new guitarplayer was brought in. Back to the demo I am weak for excellent singers as you might have guessed and Charles rytkönen is one of the best to come out of sweden, even though he has a very strong Jon(god)Olivafeel his vocalwork is a real masterpiece + he is a great frontman too, Morgana lefay has page on the internet as well, feel free to take a look in that.

Space probe Taurus(Swe) title:Low on karma..high on speed. This band is actually a long time project that envolved to a band just recently, formed just outside of Karlstad a couple of years ago the aim was to play a style of music similar to their idols Monstermagnet, they recorded the first tape just as a threepiece on the second tape they brought in a singer, after the release of that tape the singer left and the project was put on hold, the three members 2 guitarists and a drummer started to look around after the break for a singer I think they tried out at least 5 or 6 singers none of them fitted in!!! the 3 members got tired again after so much struggeling and the project was put on hold again, in early 97 a big change turned out to be very positive for the band they changed rehearsalplace, and the 3 members decided to record this tape in march 97 just something to prove for possible frontmen. The songs on the tape is very Monstermagnetinfluenced, close to ripoff but the band shows talent. Ola (guitarist) sings on the tape he is doing the best he can but like I said earlier it is just something to prove for singers. Hopefully the band finds their singer and I also hope that the band get a more own style in the future, this demo is a good start anyway.

Jonah Quizz(Swe) title:Demo This one came out in 1984, 4 tracks are included and the direction is heavy metal with a melodic touch the vocals are in swedish. The band I guess started out in the early 80s in the regions of Stockholm and the member in the lineup that later would become famous was Johan Langquist who turned up as a singer on the first Candlemassalbum Epicus...Johan sings in Swedish on this tape and it sounds really terrific great hooklines with a powerful sound to it.The band also did a demo 1982 and they played also RockSM that year(a swedish rock contest) they didnt win Europe won it instead, so the band carried on up to 1986 when Johan did the incredible vocalwork on the first Candlemassalbum, after epicus..Johan carried on with Jonah..and other bands up to 1992 when Candlemass actually called him again and asked if he wanted to replace Messiah, he did one rehearsal but nothing took off instead Candlemass got Thomas Wikström. Finally it was just a shame that Jonah Quizz didnt receive the success they deserved I got both demos 82/84 and it is really amazing, classic pieces in the history of swedish metal.

Timothy griffiths Psychedelic Sunrise(Swe) title:Demo This band is included on the hand of doompage if you want to know more about them. The tape came out in 1993 and back then it was a bit different lineup beside originalmembers Per and Tim it was Tobias Gustafsson(Vomitory) on bass and Hellcop(Gehennah) on drums. The recording took place outside of Karlstad and out of that 3 songs came out all of them in the vein of The Obsessed, Pentagram and early Sabbath the songs is very grooving and Pers guitarriffs is the leading light backed with Tims pretty original vocals, Tobias and Hellcop does a good job as well with the backup. Both Tobias and Hellcop left and replacements were Kenneth drummer from the punkband shine and a guy named Kristian. The band has recorded a couple of more recordings from that 93 tape and they have supported both Count Raven and Toydolls(!!!!).

Angelwitch(UK) title:Demo 79 One of the greatest demos ever recorded by this band that released one of the most ultimate heavy metal albums in history. This demo was the first official release and it grabbed the attention of the UK label Bronze that signed the band immediatelay. 3 songs of 4 ended up on their debut album that was released in 1980(see recordreviews) but the 4th track extermination day became a classic in the Angelwitch liveset. On this tape the strong influences from Black sabbath shines through, Angelwitch did a few more demos after this one really great too also a bunch of 7Ó that is very rare today. But beside the album I hold this demo very high, it is just a shame that Angelwitch never broke big.

Trouble(US) title:Demo 83 The Chicago metalheroes started out in 1979, and this tape was the first breakthrough the band received, recorded in early 1983. Brian slagel Boss of Metal blade got a hold of this tape and one of the tracks the last judgement ended up on Brians Compilationalbums Metal Massacre that became a good start for the band, Brian saw the talent in Trouble and managed to release a 12Ó called Assassin also a track from this demo backed with a cover of the Cream song tales of brave ullyses, both the 12Ó and the compilationalbum did really well and Brian signed a permanent contract with Trouble. The bands debut Psalm 9(see recordreviews) had 3 songs from this tape, from the debut Trouble went from Strength to strength and the rest is history, now this year 1997 it is strong rumours that Trouble may have found a new lineup lets just hope for the best, back to the demo I guess a lot of you are familiar with the songs Bastards will pay, Psalm 9, assassin and the last judgement and with that tracklist the tape comes across like a hurricane.

Psychotic Waltz(US) title:Demo 89 A very underrated band in some parts of the world while in other they attract a pretty good audience. Psychotic waltz came out of California in the late 80s and with this tape they managed to make a bit of a name for themselfes by tapetraders and word of mouth, what is so special about them?? it is of course the songs they do, with the mix of early 70s progressive bands combined that with the total heaviness they created something really spectacular when this tape came out. They got signed to german label Dream circle(later to Bullet proof) and they invited the band to play at the Dynamo open air festival and the european fans was knocked out both their music also that one of the guitarists was sitting in a wheelchair, after the debut the band did in my opinion their best album to date Into the everflow(rel.92) and later Mosquito. For those who hasnt heard Psychotic Waltz I can say that if you are a fan of Dream Theater Rush etc. then I advice you to check this band out.

The 3´rd and the mortal(Norw.)title:Demo This 6piece was formed 1992 and released this highly acclaimed demo in 1993, the 3 songs on the tape is performed in a beutiful and very emotional way with female singer Kari on top of a gothic and doomladen background the band has 3 guitarplayers!!!! which is kind of a record, Kari sings in both Norwegian and english on the tape and I really admire the vocals in terms of female singing the only one next to Kari is Mariana of Left hand solution she is also armed with a excellent voice. The first track Grevinnens bön also the second Ring of fire ended up on the 1994 release the ep Sorrow released by the Norway label Head not found, shortly after Sorrow the debut album Tears laid in earth was released still one of the greatest albums ever released by a norwegian band also released by Head not found ,the demotrack Deathhymn ended up on that album. By 1995 kari left and was replaced by another female singer , Kari went Solo. Back to the demo 4 years down the line this tape is a classic.
