| Different turbine types are used to make the energy transformation as
effective as possible at different operating conditions (heads and water flows). The aim
is always that the turbines will reach the best possible efficiency. The choice between today's turbine types (Kaplan, Francis or Pelton) is mainly depending on head (see diagram to the right) but also partly on water flow. There have been many other turbine types, but they have been outrivalled because of lower efficiency and higher manufacturing costs. |
