Sisters of Mercy: Pointless knowledge
...all I know for sure, all I know for real, is knowing doesn't mean so much...

The name...
The bands name is taken from the song "Sisters of Mercy" by Leonard Cohen. Since it is also the name of a community of nuns and a slang-expression for whores, it is a perfect metaphor for a rockband, according to Andrew.

Andrew Eldritch once said that if he could change one thing in the bands history it would probably be the name. He would choose a shorter one, so it could be printed in larger characters on posters etcetera.

The songs...
The phrase "96 below the waves" in Temple of Love is a cross-reference to the song 96 tears by ? and The Mysterons. (The singer really did call himself ?) Thanks to Dr C for this information.
