One morning we took the post bus (that delivers post to the more distant villages up in the mountains) into Valle Verzasca, and got off at the last stop, the village Sonogno.
You'll find images of saints here and there, and especially along the mountain roads - many of them have been put up by people who have narrowly managed to survive a car crash, or by the relatives in memory of those who did not survive ...
The mountain roads can be very narrow, and usually have a wall of rock going up on one side - and a precipice for the fast way down on the other side. The first time I took the post bus I almost jumped out of my seat when it sounded its siren - it is necessary to warn oncoming cars that the bus is coming, because there are spots where two vehicles can't meet - not if one of them is a bus.
