Some comments about the style sheet
Why?
Several reasons, of which the below are a few:
- I wanted to move to HTML 4.0 Strict to ease maintenance
and error-checking of the pages
- I wanted a non-Mosaic-derived look without going for
complicated and clumsy solutions like tables, font,
etc.
- I wanted to learn CSS
Why now?
Two reasons:
- I'm writing a book about "Dynamic HTML", mainly concerning itself with
CSS so I needed a reasonably large project to work with and learn it
- The 3.5 beta of the Opera web
browser appeared, which meant that there were two browsers

Why does it look like crap in browser XXX?
Probably due to a buggy implementation of CSS in your browser.
To take one examples, Netscape 4.x doesn't handle floats, line-heights or
list button images correctly. Internet Explorer 3.x is even worse.
Similar troubles might be experienced in other browsers.
The easiest way to remedy this is to turn off CSS/style sheets
in your browser - the pages will then be fully viewable if rather
bland-looking. The same is true if your browser doesn't support
CSS in the first place.
But the best option is to badger your browser manufacturer about
getting proper CSS support and send them bug reports.
