In an unofficial
referendum in the northern part of Iraq
during the elections, 98.76 percent of votes
were cast in favor of independence.
The
Secretary-General of the Iraqi Kurdistan
Referendum High Council, Asu Kerim claimed that,
"1 million 973 thousand citizens want an
independent Kurdistan." Announcing the result of
the referendum in Erbil, Kerim indicated that
the members of the High Council did not have any
relations with the political parties but they
held the referendum just to learn the thoughts
and demands of the people living in the region.
Explaining that they asked the citizens three
questions, 'Do you want an independent
Kurdistan?', 'Do you want a Federal Kurdistan?'
and 'Do you want to live as a part of Iraq?'
Kerim added: "The public participated in this
referendum with totally their own will. 91
percent of the citizens who voted in the
elections participated in this referendum after
voting. Only the police and observers were
allowed near the ballots. No one attempted to
pressure anybody."
According to
the statement 1 million, 998 thousand and 61
citizens cast votes in the regions of Erbil,
Suleymaniye, Kerkuk (Kirkuk), Mosul, Duhok and
Hanekin in the referendum, of which 1 million,
973 thousand and 412 of the citizens wanted an
independent Kurdistan. 19 thousand 850 of them
voted to live as a part of Iraq and 4 thousand
799 citizens cast invalid votes. The results of
non-official referendum will be sent to Iraq and
the party representatives in the region as well
as various human rights institutions and Arabic
countries.
