Knitty's fall surprise

Knitty.com always publishes a little surprise "mid-term", and this year's autumn gift is a pdf dedicated to breast cancer. The special Knitty issue contains a booby scarf (with optional nipples), a chemocap (lovely even as a "normal" hat!), a pair of indoor socks and a pretty heart scarf. Apart from that, there is a survivor's story and countless reminders to exam yourself. Please, do.

Time to knit

My third Secret Nordic friend has received her package. Time to start thinking about the fourth and last gift. We have received the addresses, and the package should be sent in the first half of November. This time it is knitting supplies, again.

Do Redo - how to butcher a sweater

Do Redo [SW]

A Swedish project with a book, workshops and kits. Nice, and inspiring.

Back from Berlin

I have spent four days on a design conference in Berlin, and my head is as packed with ideas as my bags are overflowing with books and magazines. I just wish there was some extra time, somewhere... I brought some knitting with me, a sweater for one of all "my" babies. The yarn is a silk/cotton chenille from Noro, bought in a fit of eBay craze. The colours are too sharp for my liking, and I have realized that I hate knitting with chenille. Luckily it's a small size, so I'll try to finish it as quickly as possible.

(One Berliner idea: graffiti embroidery)

When I came home last night, my third secret Nordic friend package was waiting for me. It contained a pair of mittens from Liisa, made to match the scarf I did with the yarn from my first secret friend, Fru Schwartz. Lovely. liisa also added some very nice-looking patterns for babyclothes. Hundreds (at least it feels like that...) of little voices will scream THANK YOU... I am late with my own package nr 3, and I have been granted a few days extra time from our fearless leader Karine. So, if you are waiting and waiting for your package, it might be from me. It will come, soon.

Oh, baby!

Three pics of the lovely Oskar.

(Showing off his babybarkarole.)

Shiny buttons, impossible to reach. Built-in frustration!

I knitted this for Joel ten years ago, and now Oskar is the fifth little boy who wears it. Talk about a little scrap yarn going a long way!

Crocheting young men

ICA-kuriren: Hobby Virkning[SW]

Britt A sent this link to the Swedish mailinglist "Sticklistan". It's about two extreme-skiers who have started a company making crocheted hats. It is claimed in the article that crocheting needs to be done by hand, there are no crocheting machines. I had never thought about that. For those who speak Swedish, a basic pattern for a crocheted hat is available in the right hand bar in the article.

Mmm silky and soft

Did you see Anne's comment below? I certainly did, and found myself exposed to a a large number of Very Nice Things. Like this...Outlet Lana Grossa: Tusshena. A shiny silk/mohair mix (55% silk, 45% mohair) to a bargain price. Instead of 9.48 per ball, they offer it for 2.95. And even cheaper if you buy ten balls. Oooo I like the look of it. And the colours. This might be a good replacement for Lion & Lamb in the Clapotis scarf mentioned below.

And while we're at it: what about kid-mohair for 99 cents?

Some eyecandy before I go:

The Luxemburgish wool I bought two weeks ago.

The mohair I dyed by soaking a dry ball of wool in orange Kool-aid. The white you see came from the inside of he ball, which the dye never reached.

(Yesterday I received a skein of handcoloured Opal from Sticka. My six-year old son has already claimed it for mittens, socks and a scarf. The scarf will either be very short and tiny, or striped with lots of other colours.)
