Round 6 of the Mobil 1 British Rally Championship 1998
Mats Andersson Proton Compact 1.6 litre Gr A Ops!! Things can only improve now.... On first stage we had a hard landing (not THAT bad) and the engine mounting was broken.
On stage two our sister car with Jenny and Claire went straight into a BIG tree at about 90 km/h. They reduced their speed down to 0 in about 1.5 m, or 0.12 sec, giving a averge g-force of about 20g. As we started one minute behind them we were the first car to assist them and found that Claire had damaged her neck. The ambulance was alerted through our management, who also raphidly came to assistance. Team manager Harry Hockly took a very active role in cutting Claires safety belts and lifted her out sitting in the chair into the ambulance after the doctor had fixed her neck. Luckily both Jenny and Claire could leave the hospital the following day. I´m happy that the safety arrangements in the car was so professionally built that the human bodies could withstand this enormous stress.

We retired at the end of the day with a very much overheated engine.

Things could have been worse....
June 4-6 RSAC Scottish Rally.
Round 4 and 5 of the Mobil 1 British Rally Championship 1998
Mats Andersson Proton Compact 1.6 litre Gr A Day one: Hurray!! First stage time with the car from a proper forest stage. Just on pace with the class leaders as well! Unfortunately a "250 (with engine at rev limiter) MR 40 ! KL/bridge" sat an end to the fourth round in the championship for us. However the brakes were raphidly cooled off in the clear water of a nice small stream three meters below the level of the road. Despite our warning triangle and our appearence at the entrance of the corner Julian Porter rolled his Lancer into a position close to our car. After Gavin Cox' performance in that corner he knew that his guardian angel was with him and he could do anything that day - nothing could possibly go wrong. Second day saw us taking the first class award for Proton in the Ferodo Super 1600 class by bringing the Proton Compact SRi to a third place with only minor problems. Photos.

About me

Being a co-driver myself I'm interested to hear about other people's rallying.

I have been competing for ages and have also developed a family of high quality and top performance trip meters which are designed particularly for all kinds of rallies and used by all the WC teams. These instruments are today manufactured by Coralba and sold and kept service for by my company Jemba
.
I have also developed a computerized system which is used to create organizers pace notes on rallies.

Please let me know about YOUR rallying.

Rallying in USA with Tommy Wilhelmsson

On Oct. 13:th I had the pleasure to take part in a quite new type of rally to me - TDS in USA, Florida. The background for this adventure was that I and my very first rally driver, Tommy Wilhelmsson, had decided to travel together from our homes in Sweden and spend two weeks together in the United States. As I'm a very active codriver in Sweden it felt natural to me to search on Internet for a rally in the region where we intended to spend our time. Tommy is very fond of all kinds of happenings so of course he agreed in my enthusiasm. From information on the net I also created an imagination of what a TSD rally is. As I have designed computers for "our" types of rallies I had brought one of them. The day before the "Phantom of the rally", as I understand was the name of the event, we fitted the computer into our Chevy Van on a parking place in Fort Lauderdale. It turned out to be just as simple as I have told my customers during the last 20 years.

Away to the start

On our way to RAMADA INN in Hillsboro, where the start of the rally took place, we drove through a terrible rain. In Sweden we all know what happens with our gravel roads during a rally with 100 to 200 vehicles under such circumstances - they more or less disappear. In this case of course the organizers had taken into account that such things happen in Florida and virtually no gravel roads were used.

At the start

When we arrived to the location for the start we were met by some wet and friendly officials, who told us that they had not yet enough entrants to let the rally start. While waiting for more entrants they entered our Van and explained the basic facts about TSD rally. I also got answers to my list of questions that I had with me. A sample of rules in print was also given to me. After a while there were entrants enough and the start were to take place. The scrutineering before a rally in Sweden causes quite a lot of problems to a lot of competitors with all our technical rules. Therefore we were impressed by the way it took place here - it is quite logic - you are responsible yourself for your vehicle. So you should carry out the scrutineering yourself. That is about as simple it can be. Even the method for the start was admirable. In Sweden we always have a control with at least two officials - here you just set your clock and started when it showed 2:00 plus your Car # in minutes - simple but effective.

Distance measuring

As distance measurement turned out to be a very important part of a TSD rally, the first part of the rally consisted of just a distance to calibrate the computer. I'm still surprised that this procedure was defined in a way that can give an error ten times as big as what we usually get in our "pro" rallies, even though we are not dependent in such a precision. Anyway this did not cause us any problem during the rally as we didn't drive with such a precision.

Off we go

Anyway off we went and we tried to interpret the route description as correctly as possible, and as I didn't get time enough before the start to read through the rules I had to consult the printed sample during the ride. Of course the officials were also kind to advise about the rules when appropriate in the time controls. So a number of problems in how to interpret the road description were solved during the rally and some more found their solutions after finishing the rally. However the other competitors were not interested in giving any assistance during the rally. This was the first time I took part in a TSD rally and I found it to be a nice slow ride at various average speeds in our Chevy Van, just equipped with one of my tripmeters. I was surprised how well the performance of my tripmeter fitted to this (for me) new type of rally. As no maps were used I'm not quite sure of where we drove, but I know for sure that the area of Boca Raton has really nice houses. Our goal was to find our way to the finish and so we did, without taking too much notice about results. The finish was arranged at a intimate restaurant, where we could talk about our new experience and get some good chicken wings, while official ceremonies took place. We were very surprised to be awarded with a nice trophy each.

Next time

We hope to come back and experience some more TSD rallies in the future, but I also could think of taking part as an organizer for a mixed TSD and our Swedish "Car orienteering" which could have been driven on some areas we passed during the rally.

Other rallies -96

After spending two weeks in the USA I arrived at my home in Sweden on 18:th of Oct, just in time to get seven hours sleep before one of my "old" drivers - Asko Alanen - picked my up for the next rally. It was ASG-rallyt in Örebro, quite close to where I live. This was quite different from Florida. 261 cars entering, usin organisers pace notes, us competing in a Gr A Toyota Celica on twisty, narrow forest roads at speeds up to 179 km/h (over 110 MPH), where the rev limiter was set by mistake. As Asko won this rally last year, our aim of course was to repeate this and get the over all award of SEK 10 000.

On the first three stages our pace was not high enough. However we managed quite well and finished on 3:rd place over all, beeing fastest from stage 4 to 7.

On Oct 27 I was codriving with Mats Andersson on a rally in Lund in his Opel Corsa Gr A (a nice and good car, as is the young driver). 1:st in class, but no serious competition in class)

On Nov 2 I did the same in Örkelljunga with about the same results. A stone on the road destroyed our front right rim and forcing us to drive for about 7 kms with an air leak.
