NORTHERN TERRITORY is for a lot of people the real Australia- the outback. This is the best place to be to find out more about the aborigines in Australia. The population is constantly rising and is the fastest growing state in Australia. The majority of people moving in to the state is young people, over 80% of the population is under 40. Northern Territory is fairly big, the area is about one sixth of the total area in Australia, but only one percent of Australias total population lives here. This is also yhe home for "The Red Center", where it's very dry and hot during the summer, but in winter the nights are cold and sometimes the temperature drops below 0 degrees celsius.

AYERS ROCK, Uluru, or simply "The Rock",
is the big red rock located in the center of Australia.
The rock is really red itself, but if you get up bright
and early, or stay up late at night, and see the rock
in sunrise/sunset, the colors get even more intense.
In the fifties the rock opened for turists wanting to
climb the rock. The reason the rock was closed
before that, was that the aboriginees has the rock as
someting holy. Inspite of that it's now free for whoever
wants to climb to do it. But it's not riskfree and all
climbing is done at your own risk. Ther is a chain that
you can hold on to parts of the way up, but climb only
if you are completly healthy, with no heart- or lung-
deseases.
To climb all the way up to the top, takes about an hour
and the best time to start your climbing is early in the
morning when it's nice and cool.
If you feel like you don't want to put your own life at risk,
you can walk around the rock, wich takes about 2 hours.

ALICE SPRINGS is a small town in the center of Australia. It's only about 150 km away from the geografical center. This is really the outback, and there's not much to do there. But a few things; The Old Telegraph Station and The Royal Flying Doctors, which is a ledgendary part of the australian outback.

KINGS CANYON is like a really small Grand Canyon,
but it's much older. Even if it's not that big, it's very
magnificent and beautiful. At the bottom of the canyon
you find "The Garden of Eden". Surrounded by rocks
is a small spring with cold frech water and big green
healthy trees. After a few hours of walking in the canyon
it's nice to get in the water to cool of.

THE OLGAS is another big mountain in the middle of Australia. If you stand on the top of Ayers Rock, you can actually see this mountain far away.
The mountain looks like it's made of flat stones packed on top of eachother.
You can take a short walk between the rock, and if you're traveling in this direction, I think this is worth a look.

THE ABORIGINES in Australia is a social outcast.
Many of them lives seperatly in small communities.
In Northern Territory there is more than 400
aboriginal communities with approximatly 12 people
in each community.
Only about 1,7 per cent of the population in Australia
is aborigines.
The aborigines has their own flag, and it looks loke this:

THE BOOMERANG is a very common sight around
Australia. You find most of them in Aboriginal art shops.
To throw a boomerang really well is quite difficult, but
even if it's your first time with a boomerang, you can
almost count on the boomerang to come back to you!

THE DIDJERIDOO
The didjeridoo is a wooden instrument wich is also very common i Australia.
It's quite difficult to learn how to play the didjeridoo because first you have
to learn how to do circular breathing- that means you have to breath in through
your nose at the same time as you breath out through your mouth.
There's another type of didjeridoo, called an "Emu caller". It's much smaller
and is used for atrackt emues.
